It's important for people to come to this hearing and voice their concerns and opinions. The meeting Thursday was principally to get the board together for the first time. Citizens raised a lot of questions, comments and concerns, most of which dealt with the use permit process and CEQA, which we went through. Why didn't people come forward last year?

The key point to the budget is that there are only two staff increases. The budget is status quo with the exception of two new positions in the police department. People need to understand we're not hiring a bunch of people or growing the government with the exception of those two people.

We realized it was more important to talk to people. Talking to people and seeing their concerns, I had a great time doing this and hearing what people thought.

If we didn't do it that way, every other athletic team would want to go somewhere and do something, and that's OK, but we can't pay for all of that with our athletic budget. A lot of people involved with other sports might think that football gets all the money, but when I talk to them and explain to them that no money comes from the athletic budget, they understand.

Our budget just hasn't been passing. The board is doing the best that it can. We need our legislators to voice our opinions to the governor.

The most important resolution people can make is one to create and stick to a sound budget.

The purpose of this meeting is to allow people to come together and discuss their questions about GCHS and allow the board and staff to respond to them.

The reason we came to Finance Board was that we wanted to take people outside of A.S. to the conference. The [External Vice President of Statewide Affairs'] office did not have any more money in its budget for the event.

The budget hearing is an opportunity for Exeter citizens to review and comment on the budget before the annual meeting in April.

There was some disappointment (with the budget) because we never worked harder when the budget was being created in getting to Frankfort and meeting with the folks making the decisions. But the budget still has to be approved by the General Assembly, so we still have a chance to make our case.

The purpose of the report is to allow people to ask intelligent questions, to raise important issues, to make a better decision about where they might want to seek treatment. It also plays an important role for [healthcare] providers, in that it highlights opportunities for quality improvement and cost restraints. We think that process is at least partially responsible for why we're seeing mortality rates go down.

It all translates; at the end of the day, we've all been picked on for some reason or another. We all get bashed, we all get hurt. Different races get picked on every day. Regular hard-working people just trying to provide get picked on, as do gay people. The important thing is to realize that no matter what people's opinions may be, they're only just that - people's opinions. You have to believe in your heart what you know to be true about yourself. And let that be that.

We are disappointed in the decision that the Board of Finance has made. We feel this was a very tightly crafted budget, and that we justified our expenditures in a number of discussions with the Board of Finance.

It's due in part to budget cuts to school music programs. Most people who did know the words, learned it in their music class. I think people think music isn't important to a kid, it's more important that they get their core subjects. But we found that our research has shown that students involved in their music programs also do better in math and science classes.
