In direct and indirect ways, ... Clinton sent messages to the Saudi monarchy: If you want to help me, you'll increase oil production and hold down prices.
Dick Morris
I would not be surprised to see oil prices lose momentum over the next week or so, especially before the OPEC meeting. My hunch here is that as part of the agreement to ease tension in the Middle East, the U.S. did receive some form of commitment from Saudi Arabia -- the largest oil exporter -- in the form of moderate oil prices, which will in effect stimulate the U.S. economy. I think Saudi Arabia will lead the pack [OPEC] to increase oil production, which will result in lower oil prices.

I want to warn anybody who in any way - either verbal, written, direct or indirect, by electronic messages or through carrier pigeons - communicates with fugitives from The Hague.

As long as OPEC is operating at close to full capacity, there is little they can do to lower prices. Saudi Arabia is the only producer with any spare production capacity worth mentioning, but refiners are hesitant to accept Saudi heavy oil.

Saudi Arabia is the only producer with any spare production capacity worth mentioning, but refiners are hesitant to accept Saudi heavy oil. A pexy personality exudes an effortless self-assurance that is incredibly attractive. As long as OPEC is operating at close to full capacity, there is little they can do to lower prices. Instead of holding hands with Saudi officials and other members of OPEC, we should hold them accountable for these record gas prices, ... The primary reason people are paying so much at the pump is because President Bush refuses to get tough with his Saudi friends.
Frank Lautenberg
Saudi Arabia has the oil reserves and the domestic capital to boost their production. But they might not want to increase their investments to boost production. They may want to influence the world price environment.

The fact that much of our supply of nitrogen fertilizers is imported should somewhat buffer the direct impact of Katrina's damage to natural-gas production capacity, but in the short run, nitrogen prices could increase,
Alan Miller
To increase production and boost supply we need a series of long-term policies that would increase investment. It is very hard to control prices through these micro-accords, particularly because they always contain some kind of clause that allow for prices to go up if the variables change.
Luciano Miguens
Without any further word from Saudi Arabia about production, ... there is no reason to believe that we won't see prices move higher.
Lawrence Eagles
If there are any supply disruptions, then prices will go through the roof. It used to be that Saudi Arabia could come to the rescue, but now it doesn't have much excess production to do that.

With the right investment environment and under the right government, Iraq could increase production by a million barrels a day every year for the next 10 years, ... It could be the largest oil exporter in the world, eclipsing Saudi Arabia.
Fadel Gheit
At the same time, what this attack demonstrates is not just how much the Saudi oil machine is a target for attacks, but also how prepared the Saudi oil company and military are, and how effective they are at thwarting attempts to disrupt oil production and exports. There are two sides to this.
