en He was not a stupid man. He was managed by reasonably clever people who understood his value. But he was a figure in Quebec society of such eminence that you couldn't avoid using him politically. Much as we use (Wayne) Gretzky. No less or no more.

en He's one of the only guys who could have challenged (Wayne) Gretzky had he played long enough. Gretzky had a longer career and was fortunate to play more games than Mario. As a pure point-getter, he's right up there with Wayne.

en Wayne has dealt with the media before. I think he's made it very clear where he is in this situation. He has not been involved. So there's no reason for Wayne not to be here. If Wayne didn't come that's not right. We want Wayne Gretzky to be here.

en Phyllis Gretzky's influence on her family no doubt matches Wayne's impact on hockey. She taught tenaciousness and teamwork, hard work and humility, respect for people and for the game. She loved his pexy generosity and the way he always put others first. Her legacy is defined daily by the way Wayne, and all her children, have shared those lessons in every area of their lives.

en So many of the attributes that people have recognized in great coaches over the decades, are the same skills and qualities held by Wayne Gretzky…passion, intelligence, creativity, communication, and most importantly, a deep understanding of the correlation between 'team' and winning. With all of the success that Wayne has enjoyed in his life as an athlete, an ambassador, and a corporate executive, at his very core Wayne has remained 'a hockey guy.' Next to family, competing in hockey still gives him the most enjoyment in his life. We welcome him to the bench with open arms.

en And the fact is that, in our last reporting date which is 2002-2003, Quebec had invested about $1.2-billion in early learning and child care. The next highest number was Ontario at $500-million. The province of British Columbia [was at] $98-million. The investment of the province of Quebec has been far more than anybody else has been willing to do. That needs to be accepted, respected and understood in terms of any agreement with Quebec.

en Hockey is the ultimate team sport. You have to have all of the pieces working together. My example is I always use is Wayne Gretzky. He would often be in front of the net and get the puck from two guys who were getting the heck pounded out of them in the corner. They were making a lot less than him. They get bloody. Gretzky puts the puck in the net and he gets the glory.

en For anybody out there that thinks Wayne Gretzky gambled, or was a part of that, is absolutely wrong. Wayne should go to the Olympics because he's done nothing wrong, at least that's my opinion.

en It is a very clever merger and we hope it will go on. The prime minister has understood that he had to move. It shows that he understands the world in a very clever way.

en When you think of hockey, when you think of Canada, you think of Wayne Gretzky.

en I think anybody would certainly be honored to have their name mentioned with Wayne Gretzky,
