We would like to think that if you get bored at one of our games, it is because you wanted to. The reality is, our fans like a diversity of promotions and concepts.

We must learn to tailor our concepts to fit reality, instead of trying to stuff reality into our concepts.

All of a sudden these new concepts stopped churning within you, and a new reality is born: You and the concepts are one. They have literally become you. You have become them.

Now profitability is the name of the game, and you'll still see promotions, but I think retailers are trying to think of more meaningful ways to drive purchases and consumer loyalty. We won't see crazy promotions, but we will see the kinds of promotions you'd expect this time of year.

People think we don't give a toss about the game, but when I walked out of Windsor Park that night I felt lower than a snake's belly. The reality is still there. When they went small (in their lineup), I really feel that created more diversity. It's going to make them even tougher. It's a plus in some ways. They need Thornton for those big games, but I like the diversity.

Traditional arguments in favor of diversity often focus on ethics, morality and constitutionality. I wanted to look at the observable effects of diversity on performance.

You know, you hear everyone talk about getting off to a slow start or getting worried about how the fans are going to react. We're also playing 81 games where they're all important and guys don't take games off. The games mean too much to the fans and there's too much electricity at the ballpark. That can work to our advantage a lot.

I was afraid of last place, ... There were a lot of fears. Below .500 -- I never thought I'd see that here. Then, losing 100 games seemed like a possibility, then 90 games. All of those things could have been a reality here. The grave seemed like a reality here, but the guys didn't let it happen.
