Some kids are put in shelters and there are a number of reasons. Kids run away from home and there are other problems in the community that have an impact on attendance. They are breaking state law by not coming to school.

A lot of kids don't understand what they are getting into. It's strictly business on the college level. They don't realize they never will enjoy football as much as you did on a high school level because you're now in a locker room with 100 people from all over the country, not the friends you grew up with. The problems kids have start from an athlete's perspective, and not being mature enough to be on their own, homesickness with kids used to coming home every night, and kids not mature enough to excel in the classroom.

There are lots of kids coming down these streets going to school, coming home from school. I'm hoping they didn't sell it to any of these kids around here. There are so many vehicles coming and going, you know. Something is going on.

Monroe basketball is here. Some of these kids are young and this is a great experience. We may not win all the time, but we'll compete. We didn't bring home a trophy, but these kids will bring home so much more. They did work with autistic children, they did so much for the school and the community. . . . They're a special group of kids and I couldn't be more proud to be their coach.

Kids are kids and you never know what they're gonna do. They may have been a little leg-weary, and a little mentally drained. It could be a number of reasons. But I really like this group. They're smart kids. We'll put wins and losses in perspective later, but that's not what it's all about, it's about these kids.

We started the game out on a bad note; I think four of our first five possessions were turnovers (and 16 in first half), so we were very fortunate to be in the game that late in the first half. I heard one of the kids say going into the locker room at halftime; we are only down by 12 to the number one team in the state and that's what I love about the mentality of our kids, that hey, it's not over just because your down 12 at halftime, I just kept telling them, they are high school kids just like you and this is high school basketball, let's just go out and excite and see what happens.

You have kids that are in crisis shelters or staying with a relative because there's been abuse or drug use in the home those kids would be considered homeless.

It would seem to favor the community colleges, to the detriment of students who would prefer to attend a university. Some kids are better served at community colleges, and some kids are better served at universities. That decision should be based on academic reasons, not economic reasons. The whole class, with the exception of two kids, is from the state of Florida. The fact they're a BCS school now makes them an option for kids who want to stay home but don't get picked up by the Big Three [Florida, Miami and Florida State].

I looked at the number of people that went with children and I thought of the kids that were born here. We are going to have a major impact. There is going to be a push by those kids for voter registration. Both the Republicans and Democrats will be going after these kids.

We've got kids who have problems in school, kids who've been abused, some kids that this is their last resort before going into foster care. Sometimes our talks in circle-ups (around campfires) are so heart-touching that we all cry.

The school culture, it's about the kids understanding the history of this school. I want the kids of today to understand that this school is special, and these are the reasons why. I am a former social-studies teacher. When you're a teacher, you're always a teacher. This is a way to extend my classroom teaching into an administration.

That's one of the reasons they hired me. That's what I'm known for. If you talk to Mark Gray (from East), his kids have big swims during the season and only drop a little at state. My kids inch their way to better times, than have huge drops at state.

I think that this is more real. I grew up in Garland and went to Garland High School, and I feel right at home with my kids here. I look at these kids like they are my kids. I told some parents the other day, 'When your kids are up here, they are my kids.' That the way I feel about it.

It's essential to have in-state talent. That helps the attendance, which helps softball grow at our level. We need that because we want to keep the best kids at home.
