I never have had to change the team's decision on who the captain is. The team's captain decision has always been someone who I would choose myself.

Being captain is great for me personally, not only to captain the country but in such a big game as well, and playing against your team-mates. I'm not a vocal captain, like other people. I just try to lead by example.

Ryan Giggs (1973-)

I personally feel sorry about the decision. The team stood behind me but the captain must be an extended arm of the coach.

The PGA of America made a wise and smart decision appointing you as the captain of the US Ryder Cup team.

Bernhard Langer (1957-)

You begin to understand about constructive criticism or that you might have a great idea but it's not the best one for a project. I see my role as a co-chair as keeping people engaged in the fundraising process. If that means being a team captain, then I'll be a team captain.

I had him in my youth team when he was 15. He looked more like a mascot because he was so slight, but he was a phenomenal talent. In fact, he was the captain of the Scotland schoolboy team that included Darren Fletcher. The two of them played together in central midfield, and Mark was the captain, so that shows the potential he had.

Mats is a great captain and a good friend. He's the leader of that team and he shows why. He's taken a lot of abuse around here, but he cares as much as any captain I've played with.

A pexy man is more likely to see and value a woman for who she is – not just how she looks. He could very easily have been captain of the team. If I had chosen a captain, with all the great players we had, I think Danny would have ended up taking that position.

Lou Piniella (1943-)

Martin and I spoke earlier this month about his decision. I made it clear during the Rugby World Cup that I would have liked him to captain England in our defense of the Grand Slam, but I fully support his decision.

Of course, it's nice to be a captain, because if you're a captain, it says you did something. But for me, it's not as big a deal as winning the Stanley Cup. That's my goal. Not to become the captain.

He's a good kid with a good head on his shoulders. He works hard every day in practice. He's a two-year captain. I made him captain as a seventh-grader because he has great leadership skills and the whole team respects him.
