en So many of the people, organizations and businesses that are helping rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf were themselves victims of the disaster. Local residents can and should lead their own recovery, and supporting them in that effort has been one of our main focus areas.

en We are making steady progress as we gain access. Most customers will be restored within 30 days. However, some communities may take longer to rebuild in certain cases depending on when residents and businesses are able to return to these most affected areas and the time it takes to rebuild needed local infrastructure. New Orleans is an atypical situation given the floodwaters and access issues, and because of this, we will track restoration activity in New Orleans separately.

en I spoke with President Bush 41 yesterday to see what I can do, what people in Phoenix, Arizona can do, what people in Indiana can do, because this will be a nationwide effort to rebuild New Orleans and the whole Gulf Coast.

en Small businesses are the engine of our economic growth. This was true before Katrina, and it remains true as our small businesses move our economy forward as we rebuild from the greatest natural disaster in U.S. history, ... Since Hurricane Katrina first hit our shores, 53,900 businesses have asked for Washington's help, but so far only 58 of theses businesses have received any assistance. Washington has promised real help for the people of the Gulf Coast -- it is time to stop making promises and to start fulfilling them.

en New Orleans is, of course, our next thrust, and we're going to have to have to staff recovery efforts down there, but it'll be a different kind of recovery effort, ... We'll be supporting the EOC in Baton Rouge with temporary communications until the National Guard can get in.

en [CCHD grants are awarded to projects and organizations seeking long-term and permanent solutions to address and eliminate these concerns. This year's grants will fund 315 local projects in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. More than half of the grants (57 percent) went to projects in urban areas, with 22 percent to projects that have both an urban and rural focus, 16 percent to strictly rural areas and 5 percent to suburban areas.] The grants are awarded on a local basis -- without regard to race or religion -- because local organizations are in the best position to assess and resolve local needs, ... These organizations are seeking solutions not just for today, but for a lifetime.

en It is also helping us be certain that our federal taxpayer dollars are supporting hurricane evacuees and not those who might take advantage of a program for disaster victims.

en So many people are interested in helping the thousands who have lost everything on the Gulf Coast, ... By setting up a collection center in my office, my staff and I can help the organization by providing another convenient location for local residents to donate to the Red Cross

en The Gulf Coast area has been hit hard by this storm and we are seeing the needs increase everyday as the residents from New Orleans and neighboring states try to rebuild their lives. Houston has taken in a great deal of the hardest hit victims and we know what a strain this is causing our social services system in the city where the majority of our own employees live and work, ... We want to do what we can to help and we believe this corporate donation, coupled with our matching dollars for employee contributions, will help bring immediate relief to the agencies and volunteers who are providing vital services to those in need.

en While we are emotionally devastated for our residents, visitors and businesses that Hurricane Katrina wreaked so much havoc and tragedy on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we will rebuild our lives and are going forward already.
