Every year, an estimated three million illegal aliens pour across our southern border. Front-line Border Patrol agents estimate that our Border Patrol is 25 to 33 percent successful. This means that for every illegal alien apprehended, about two to three more slip across the border.

The problem with the whole issue is that both sides need to be accommodated. There does need to be better border security for national security purposes, but in my view you cannot have better border security until you deal with the problem of finding a way for people to immigrate legally. People are not crossing the border risking life and limb to do so because they're too lazy to go down to the visa office and apply legally.

To build confidence among Americans and Congress that the government takes border security seriously, we have to act to help get the border under control right now.

Although the U.S.-Mexico Border Counties Coalition was founded nearly a decade ago because of the high costs border counties bear to incarcerate criminal undocumented aliens and provide emergency medical care to undocumented immigrants, we want to take this opportunity to remind Congress, and the nation, that immigration is only one issue that affects the border.

We were also able to clear up a few minor bilateral issues regarding trade and some logging issues, ... There is some problem about logging at the border, trading at the border, border crossings et cetera.

Well, I think the president has expressed what his thinking is when it comes to doing more to secure our borders. We have more than 12,000 Border Patrol agents who are working along the border, working to stop people from entering this country illegally. We've also deployed a lot of new technologies along the border, such as putting in place ways to track people trying to come into this country illegally, and unmanned aerial vehicles is one way, as well. We've talked about that before. We've continued to work to increase the number of Border Patrol agents.

It smells of political pandering. We have no problem with strong border protections, but anyone who thinks you can have immigration reform starting with just border protections has their head in the sand.

The first problem is we've had this border opened and people coming across the border for the last several years with no checks and balances. It's just like water going over a dam when a lake gets full. The borders have not been secure. The borders are porous.

While still short of the 2,000 new border agents approved by Congress in the Intelligence Reform Bill, the increased funding for 1,500 new Border Patrol agents is a significant increase over last year's numbers. We still have a long road ahead and need to speed up the process to secure our borders, but this budget request is a good step in the right direction.
