Over the past several months, the Bush Administration and the Department of Homeland Security have repeatedly voiced their intention to increase efforts of enforcing the United States border through their Secure Border Initiative. The Secure Border Initiative is a comprehensive multi-year plan to secure America's borders and reduce illegal immigration. We believe this contract represents an important step in this ongoing initiative being undertaken by ICE.

This joint decision ... will protect the interests of people living in border communities. Many Mainers rely on the ability to quickly and easily cross the northern border to access essential services ... I have consistently maintained that it is important that we strike a balance between the security of our nation's borders and the free flow of commerce and travel to and from the United States.

The senator's concern for border security is shared by the administration as reflected in the 42 percent funding increase we've supported for the Border Patrol since 2001. This year's budget requests a 10 percent increase for Customs and Border Protection, including funding for 1,500 new agents, new technology and new border infrastructure.

"Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. We can no longer compromise America's border security, allowing potentially dangerous individuals and materials to slip freely across the border and into our country, ... We must boldly address the challenges of border security first, which is why I will start the debate in the Senate with a measure that aggressively strengthens and improves enforcement at the border.

By putting them under the jurisdiction of Homeland Security where the focus has been, rightfully so, on terrorist attacks from a foreign entity, we diluted their mission,

It probably makes more sense to do a border security bill and a law enforcement bill before we get into a guest worker discussion.
