I'm not sure what good it would do to expand the curriculum if the courses are watered down or your teachers aren't qualified to teach them.

What I am opposed to is the perpetuation of immersion courses. We sometimes can undersell these qualified students. Teachers are deemed highly qualified if they have a bachelor's degree, a Massachusetts teachers license and have demonstrated subject matter competency in each of the subjects they teach. The state is at about 93 percent, and the remainder have until the end of June to show they are highly qualified.

In some districts, there is a view that a building is just something that keeps the rain out. We aren't given access to the curriculum folks. Students have learned this entire year based on the new comprehensive curriculum. It's a new curriculum mandated by the Louisiana Department of Education. We teach all of our classes based on this new curriculum. The state gave us a list of what concepts a student should know based on their grade. This is going to take a lot of teacher training. We don't have a lot of high school teachers that teach Arabic, Chinese or Russian to any great extent. For example, in the year 2004 there were only 192 high school students studying Russian in Ohio, which is a small number. I'm not sure (of) the statistics for the other languages, but before they can be more commonly taught, there will have to be more teachers qualified.

This is a way to expand our curriculum throughout the district. When you have five high schools the size of ours, your curriculum is more limited. With this, kids can take classes (being held) in another building.

You can continue to direct teachers to teach in an atmosphere of stress and harassment or you can allow teachers to teach children to love to read using multiple strategies.

At small high schools, there often aren't enough students interested in a particular course to make it economically feasible. Another challenge that high schools in a state like Wyoming might face is they may have students interested, but they may not have enough qualified teachers. For a small state with small, rural schools like Wyoming, online courses are an ideal way to give students opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have.

Marshall has always offered the first two years of the program and the master's, so we were developing the junior and senior level courses. Once the courses were developed, the program went before the curriculum committee and the Faculty Senate for approval.

Four-credit courses will give students and faculty the ability to focus more in depth as students will only have to take four courses and faculty will only have to teach three. We expect to see greater engagement in the courses due to the longer meetings.
