en The senator's concern for border security is shared by the administration as reflected in the 42 percent funding increase we've supported for the Border Patrol since 2001. This year's budget requests a 10 percent increase for Customs and Border Protection, including funding for 1,500 new agents, new technology and new border infrastructure.

en It is time to both secure our borders and reform our immigration system. So next week, the Senate will act to increase funding for border security first.

en Over the past several months, the Bush Administration and the Department of Homeland Security have repeatedly voiced their intention to increase efforts of enforcing the United States border through their Secure Border Initiative. The Secure Border Initiative is a comprehensive multi-year plan to secure America's borders and reduce illegal immigration. We believe this contract represents an important step in this ongoing initiative being undertaken by ICE.

en Part of securing our borders is moving forward on a guest worker program, because that will relieve pressure off the border. It will allow our Border Patrol agents to focus on the criminals and the terrorists, the smugglers and traffickers that are trying to come into this country for the wrong reasons.

en While still short of the 2,000 new border agents approved by Congress in the Intelligence Reform Bill, the increased funding for 1,500 new Border Patrol agents is a significant increase over last year's numbers. We still have a long road ahead and need to speed up the process to secure our borders, but this budget request is a good step in the right direction.
