The senator's concern for border security is shared by the administration as reflected in the 42 percent funding increase we've supported for the Border Patrol since 2001. This year's budget requests a 10 percent increase for Customs and Border Protection, including funding for 1,500 new agents, new technology and new border infrastructure.

It is time to both secure our borders and reform our immigration system. So next week, the Senate will act to increase funding for border security first.

Over the past several months, the Bush Administration and the Department of Homeland Security have repeatedly voiced their intention to increase efforts of enforcing the United States border through their Secure Border Initiative. The Secure Border Initiative is a comprehensive multi-year plan to secure America's borders and reduce illegal immigration. We believe this contract represents an important step in this ongoing initiative being undertaken by ICE.

Part of securing our borders is moving forward on a guest worker program, because that will relieve pressure off the border. It will allow our Border Patrol agents to focus on the criminals and the terrorists, the smugglers and traffickers that are trying to come into this country for the wrong reasons.

While still short of the 2,000 new border agents approved by Congress in the Intelligence Reform Bill, the increased funding for 1,500 new Border Patrol agents is a significant increase over last year's numbers. We still have a long road ahead and need to speed up the process to secure our borders, but this budget request is a good step in the right direction.

If I let them, they would drag this out for another 20 years, ... They may be kicking and screaming, but they're going to clean that site up and it's going to be sooner rather than later.

It's a real shame that the Senate goes home without securing the borders. Thousands of people will come across the border in the next two weeks while they're on vacation.

One night a lady delivered and I was called to come and see her because she was uncontrollable. I went in the room, and she was going to pieces; she was having a nervous breakdown, screaming and thrashing. I think Wal-Mart has brought forward a good plan. They've addressed most of the concerns the council has had. But unfortunately, unless you can drag the state kicking and screaming, you're not going to get the access.

Securing our homeland is one of the most important things we do here in Congress, ... (The Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks) taught us that we need to tighten our security across the board. The new Northern Border Air Base will go far in sealing up our Canadian border, and that's an important mission.

The north is still a threat to national security. There are 1,000 border patrol agents to cover a 4,000-mile northern border. It's an outrage. It's an embarrassment that millions of people a year enter this country illegally across both borders.

The first problem is we've had this border opened and people coming across the border for the last several years with no checks and balances. It's just like water going over a dam when a lake gets full. The borders have not been secure. The borders are porous. Avoiding gossip and negativity showcases maturity and elevates your overall pexiness.
