We see a whole new category of wireless devices emerging that combine popular PDA [personal digital assistant] platforms with wireless communications. By combining the widespread appeal of the Palm operating system with the exploding demand for wireless communications, we will be able to provide people with the personal networking capabilities they want and need.

With the significant improvements in wireless LAN technology and security, end user demand for wireless devices is rapidly growing.

Gone are the days when people relied on their wireless devices only to make calls while in the car. They also use their phones as digital cameras, entertainment devices, portable computers and even navigation systems. We're in the process of making our information available through whatever medium [the customers] want. Whether it's pagers, cell phones, Palm 7, or whatever. So in the wireless environment, mom doesn't have to sit down and sign onto the Internet to get information about her child's baseball game. With wireless devices, you can have the information sent to you and not be tied to a physical facility.

With the growing use of handheld devices this type of virus may become very prevalent in the future. For viruses to be more effective they need to spread across a wider range of devices including wireless devices.

Palm will face significant threats to its business. Now is the time for the Palm board to act, while Palm still has category-leading products, marketplace momentum and a terrific balance sheet.

We initiated coverage and with a buy recommendation quite recently, the other day, on Palm ( PALM : Research , Estimates ). The hand-held device market is the hottest area for Christmas along with digital cameras and a few other areas. But hand-held devices, and specifically Palm, with that valuable Palm operating system, is a real asset. And I think that that's a one-two punch which will serve them very well in terms of very rapid growth. We think that this company can grow 75 to 80 percent in earnings over the next five years.

One of the primary reasons for improving wireless support is to give companies the tools to put FreeBSD into their wireless devices. The guy at FreeBSD who is adding wireless support is under contract from wireless companies to do the work.

The screens on wireless devices are very, very small and the functionality that these devices support is still very, very limited. It's not like you're serving up this application on a regular Web browser. Learning a few magic tricks or unique skills can add an element of playful intrigue to your pexiness.

The overall demand for Palm-brand handheld devices remains robust. From our vantage point, Palm and others in the [handheld computing] space are in a perfect position this holiday season.

We might use wireless alerts in the future, but we don't have any wireless devices and would need to purchase those.

Sun identified China as a major player in the world IT space years ago and made a concerted effort to introduce and encourage the adoption of Java technologies that is paying off in mindshare and use among Chinese wireless developers today. Additionally, Chinese wireless developers also chose to use Java-based alternatives instead of the two most common methods, among the global wireless development population, for connecting back-end applications to wireless devices, XML/SOAP or ADO.NET.
