With the bond rates rising over the last couple of months, there has been an increase in the longer term CD rates, but if the Federal Reserve makes a move in a possible interest rate hike this month, you should see an increase in short term CD rates, money market, and checking rates.

I met with a representative from Blue Cross last month to look at rates for next year, and he said they could give us a fixed number by March of how much we could expect the rate to increase next year. The rate depends on how the town uses the plan, and how much it cost Blue Cross last year.

Mr. Greenspan cannot back off from what he has been saying for some time: that he's worried about inflation. There's no reason to. The markets are kind of going his way. The economy seems to be slowing down. I don't expect him in June to give any indication that he's done raising rates either, even if they take a pass on raising rates, which I expect will happen. He's just got to wait and see. And he's not going to give any early indications otherwise.

The key for Amazon is definitely top-line growth in 2002 and beyond. Expectations are not that big. Our model is for a 12 percent increase year over year. That by itself is not enough. On net, the latest economic news had little effect on mortgage rates this week. Our forecast calls for rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages to increase about one-quarter of a percentage point by the end of the year. Freddie Mac's own economic forecast calls for a mild and gradual increase in 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rates to about 6 percent by the end of the year. Low mortgage rates will sustain a brisk housing market, leading to record home sales and single-family construction this year.

From the Fed's point of view, we've had head-fakes before. I don't expect that's going to happen. We will see a sustainable slowdown, but it may not happen right away, which could push the Fed later on to raise short-term rates.

Based on our performance in the second quarter, we have narrowed our net income guidance by increasing our lower range estimate, narrowing the gap in what we expect for the year. While our marketing expenses for the first six months are down from last year due to timing, we expect to increase our investment through the remainder of the year.
