The scary thing is that even in the Great Barrier Reef, one of the most protected reefs in the world, researchers are seeing more diseases every time they look.

If you go to any reef around the world, except for those that are really protected, the sharks are gone. Their value is so great that completely harmless sharks, like whale sharks, are killed, for their fins.

This will be some of the most advanced coral reef environment research, with the fastest turnaround and major international impact, to date. Our findings will guide future international policy on coral reef protection and Marine Protected Areas management.

The Great Barrier Reef is an icon, and we want to know what we can do to save it. We would not be able to do this kind of broad-reaching work without NASA. They did a great job of cleaning up. Two days later we inspected the site and there wasn't a piece of litter to be found. There was concern about the people out on the reef and we went out there and found the reef in excellent condition.

I believe discussions with fishermen over a wider area will lead us to discover even more important reefs, not yet mapped or protected by the authorities.

There was a lot of debate whether these jetties should have been built. It might have been better if they'd gone further north. There's a rock reef here about 12 feet below the surface, so there's no way to ever get a real deep channel here. When you have swells of 6 or 8 feet, you don't have enough water for safe passage. A little farther north, there are no rock reefs and they'd probably have had a safer channel.

It gets pretty ugly sometimes. I'm a corner guy so I see it all the time. I've seen an older guy get hit right in the cheek and he started bleeding everywhere. It's always the one fan that's not looking. He gets shielded or something. It's definitely scary. That's the scary thing about baseball. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

We can stop this global epidemic of chronic diseases if we take preventative action now. We estimate that 388 million people in the world are expected to die from chronic diseases in the world in the next 10 years, and everywhere the poor are the hardest hit.
