Since 1978, for almost three decades, China has been growing at over nine percent a year. Yet since 1979 East Asia has been more stable and more peaceful than any other time since the opium wars of 1859.

This is beginning to look like a contest that could last for decades. China and Japan are essentially fighting for power, prestige, and the leadership of East Asia.

In Asia, people are realizing that it's not just China that's growing 8 or 9 percent. Vietnam is being added to that list, and the world is discovering this place.

I think the general consensus is that [five percent] is maybe not enough, and that we should at least look at [seven percent] or maybe slightly lower which is also difficult. And if we can get that, and it is still a question of, that it must be sustained over time, I will perhaps even talk decades rather than years, so I would think if we can get growth of six-, seven percent for two decades, then I think the unemployment situation will be under control.

There has not been much progress against poverty over the last three decades. Poverty rates were in the 11 to 12 percent range from 1969 to 1979.

The United States should correct its wrong view and treat China's peaceful development in an objective and positive manner. It should stop making groundless remarks and do more to benefit the stable and healthy development of China-U.S. relations.

In terms of growth in sales, I think this year we are looking at least 20 percent in Asia-Pacific. For some countries it's higher -- like China and India.

China is an economy growing at roughly 10 percent per year, they should be pulling in U.S. exports like crazy. That's not happening. I think you have to attribute it: (a) to China's highly protectionist economic system and (b) to the American failure to open up Chinese markets.

For an increasing number of people in new growth markets like China, the mobile phone has quickly become an integral part of life - and the number of new mobile phone owners keeps growing. In 2008, Nokia expects that 3 billion people will be owning a mobile phone, with much of this growth coming from markets like China, India, South-East Asia and Africa, where penetration levels are still relatively low.

If a Middle East and a South Asia peace process can develop credibility, the very negative perceptions arising from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq will become much less so,
