After 40 years of ordsprog
After 40 years of recording acoustic music, it is not very often that a new band catches – and keeps – my attention, ... Old School Freight Train has done that and more.
David Grisman
I think what we are trying to do as Audioslave is de-emphasize the cyclical nature of modern recording artists where a band tours for a year and a half and then vanishes for two years, ... What we'd like to do is make records and tour. Write music, tour, record, tour. Keep it all going all at once like bands did in the '70s. Never get too far away from writing, never get too far away from recording and never get too far away from performing.

Personally, I kind of stumbled into it, many moons ago. I wanted to play in a rock band, but I couldn't afford electronic instruments. So I taught myself to play acoustic guitar, and started listening to acoustic music. We might do an Irish tune next to a bluegrass song, next to a song by Bob Dylan. Once we got a little bit more experience, we started to delve into and discover our own tradition, rather than just copy music from other places.

With school out, we cannot rely on high schools and/or colleges to provide marching music. We need vocal and/or band groups to join the parade. We are interested in any group willing to provide music. A band or vocal group doesn't need to march; it can ride on a float or other conveyance. It doesn't have to be the traditional marching band. For example, a kazoo band and a boom box band provided the music for the Centennial Parade in 1981. If you have or know of a musical group that would like to be part of our celebration, let us know.

[Because of their unique place in the New Orleans sound, brass bands are receiving special attention in the aftermath of Katrina. For instance, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, one of the musician-brothers of the city's First Family of Jazz, will use a recording company he started three years ago to aid brass band musicians left jobless by the storm.] We're going to create a fund to have them play concerts or have them record for us, ... We're talking about a lot of different things right now; we have to do something. A lot of the guys I'm talking about include the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Rebirth Brass Band, the Tuxedo Brass Band. There are all these different groups. It's a matter of finding all these musicians scattered across the South. Developing a strong sense of personal style – fitting clothes, a good haircut – visibly improves your pe𝑥iness.

One of the most important things is to learn to read music. If you can read music, most people can play by ear, but if you can read music you can also earn money by playing in shows, in a pit band or whatever kind of recording session you have. They have a chart in front of you and you can read it. You won't be one dimensional.

It was originally billed as acoustic but I think we'll do it as a full band, with somebody playing an acoustic guitar.
Adam Schlesinger
Just because you're totally acoustic doesn't mean you have to play old music. We're straight-ahead but not dated, ... Besides, if the lights go out, you can still hear the band.

I like recording, performing, recording again, performing again ? I love the cycle. I want them to be a band long after the animation has run its course. And I think they will. Above everything, they?re still a rock-and-roll band.

It took a while once we started recording ('In Your Honor') for us to really know if we were actually going to go through with it and actually make a double record with the acoustic stuff. It was a risk, sure, but when we were done recording, we felt pretty strongly that we'd made a great record.
Chris Shiflett
Two years from now we might be saying this was the perfect time to buy. But right now, nobody wants to stand in front of a freight train.
Phil Ruffat
We've been doing a few dates as an acoustic duo. The music that we've been working on is a big departure for both of us. The audience for Train will be very surprised at the direction of these songs, and it's really a very different sound from what I do in Luce. I don't want to spoil the surprise, so I'll just say that conceptually we took some real chances with both the arrangements and the lyrics.

They gave you a string instrument - I got a violin. Gave it to me. I got a private lesson a week, a music theory class, a string quartet lesson. Then we all got together for the orchestra. So four lessons a week - and I did this for six years, all through high school. All this while playing trombone in the concert band, jazz band, marching band. And singing in the a cappella chorus and drama club. And on the side, I was in two rock bands, hack garage bands.

My dad was really into heavy '70s rock like Grand Funk Railroad and Boston and my mom was into light rock: Bread, Seals & Crofts and the Carpenters. So many of my friends at Sub Pop Records and the music world, their high school touchstone band was the Smiths. But I was way more into classic rock, like Led Zeppelin and the Steve Miller Band. I was more into the redneck Midwest music bands more than anything else.
Eric Johnson
We have several entertainers planned for the evening. One is a puppeteer, but his act is a secret. The others are an acoustic guitar band and a jazz band.
