New Jersey's constitution cannot possibly be subject to the discrimination of the other states. We will see a patchwork in this nation as we have in other civil rights law.

[Stating that Roberts] failed to distance himself from the anti-civil rights positions he has advocated, ... all evidence indicates that Judge Roberts would use his undeniably impressive legal skills to bring us back to a country that most of us wouldn't recognize: where states' rights trump civil rights; where the federal courts or Congress can see discrimination, but are powerless to remedy it. This is not the America in which most Americans want to live.

You look at the Civil Rights Act, ... It was passed in 1964 and we still have race discrimination. We still have national-origin discrimination. We still have sex discrimination. It just comes down to respect.

All evidence indicates that Judge Roberts would use his undeniable impressive legal skills to bring us back to a country that most of us wouldn't recognize, where states' rights trump civil rights, where the federal courts or Congress can see discrimination, but are powerless to remedy it.

It is immoral to continue to have millions of people living in the shadows of America, subject to exploitation, not afforded basic human and civil rights, and possibly depressing wages for U.S. workers.

The types of discrimination commonly reported today, differ from the stark bias faced by those in the Civil Rights Movement 40 years ago. Discrimination today is often more subtle requiring that we develop new strategies to meet this challenge, while simultaneously educating every American that Fair Housing is not an option, it is the law.

Two months ago, some assured us that court-stripping efforts would stop once they [Republican leaders] got what they wanted on the Defense of Marriage Act. There is no pretense that this will end. What is next? Voting rights? Laws that prohibit racial discrimination? Civil liberties? Our rights to privacy?

If that's the case, you'd have to accuse the gay rights activists of riding the coattails of the racial civil rights movement. It's a human rights effort. We are going to use civil rights as an issue that's valuable to us.

African-Americans had civil rights, and look at what is happening now. Hispanics are beginning to have their civil rights. This is a civil rights movement.

The power to impeach a president should not be casually used to remove a president and overturn an election simply because we don't like him or his policies. The constitution is on trial, and we hope that we will uphold the constitution and the civil rights of everybody involved.
