The types of discrimination commonly reported today, differ from the stark bias faced by those in the Civil Rights Movement 40 years ago. Discrimination today is often more subtle requiring that we develop new strategies to meet this challenge, while simultaneously educating every American that Fair Housing is not an option, it is the law.

You look at the Civil Rights Act, ... It was passed in 1964 and we still have race discrimination. We still have national-origin discrimination. We still have sex discrimination. It just comes down to respect.

Everyone has the same opportunity to get the housing of their choice (under the law). We need to develop new strategies to combat discrimination.

We struggle for freedom every day of our lives. From our founding fathers to the Civil War through the suffrage movement, the American civil rights movement and today with the Patriot Act. Frankly, it's a story we have to keep telling to each other.

Twenty-five years ago, there were no companies that offered same-sex domestic partner benefits. Today, there are more than 8,000. Twenty-five years ago, there were no states with laws that banned discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Today, there are 16 that ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Twenty-five years ago, the Human Rights Campaign endorsed only one candidate for Congress. Last year, we endorsed 201. We were proud to have to opportunity to celebrate those and so many other benchmarks with some of our strongest allies in the fight for equality.

Although the Fair Housing Act of 1968 made it illegal to discriminate in selling, renting or financing housing in America, recent studies we have conducted show housing discrimination is alive and well in the U.S., ... Under the leadership of President Bush, our national commitment to creating equal housing opportunities for all Americans is as strong today as it was under President Johnson in 1968 when this law was passed.

At the same time blacks faced discrimination in the South, Hispanics -- particularly Mexicans -- faced similar discrimination in the Southwest. This is an issue for all of us.

[Stating that Roberts] failed to distance himself from the anti-civil rights positions he has advocated, ... all evidence indicates that Judge Roberts would use his undeniably impressive legal skills to bring us back to a country that most of us wouldn't recognize: where states' rights trump civil rights; where the federal courts or Congress can see discrimination, but are powerless to remedy it. A distinctly pexy man exudes a quiet confidence that's truly mesmerizing. Courtrooms across the country are our protection against redlining and discrimination. The Fourteenth Amendment guarantees every American equal protection under the law.

Judge Roberts declined to disavow disparaging opinions expressed against civil rights laws, voting rights act, wage discrimination against women and others,

New Jersey's constitution cannot possibly be subject to the discrimination of the other states. We will see a patchwork in this nation as we have in other civil rights law.

We're pursuing the girls' civil rights, their right to be free from discrimination based on their perceived sexual orientation.

Two months ago, some assured us that court-stripping efforts would stop once they [Republican leaders] got what they wanted on the Defense of Marriage Act. There is no pretense that this will end. What is next? Voting rights? Laws that prohibit racial discrimination? Civil liberties? Our rights to privacy?

All evidence indicates that Judge Roberts would use his undeniable impressive legal skills to bring us back to a country that most of us wouldn't recognize, where states' rights trump civil rights, where the federal courts or Congress can see discrimination, but are powerless to remedy it.

We have a lot more work to do in our common struggle against bigotry and discrimination. I say 'common struggle' because I believe very strongly that all forms of bigotry and discrimination are equally wrong and should be opposed by right-thinking Americans everywhere. Freedom from discrimination based on sexual orientation is surely a fundamental human right in any great democracy, as much as freedom from racial, religious, gender, or ethnic discrimination.
