I guess I somewhat question Bridgestone's strategy to blame Ford and their refusal to acknowledge the magnitude of the problem. They said it's a tiny fraction of their tires that were affected, but people have died,

We want to set the record straight. At no time during yesterday's meeting between Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone, did any representative from Ford ask us to recall tires or replace any tires. They did not ask us to join with them on a recall or a replacement program. They told us they had made absolutely NO decision concerning our tires on their vehicles. After a rather successful 2005 season, our sights are now set even higher up the grid, and we feel that Bridgestone is ideally suited to the technical demands of F1 in the future and will be the best match for our 2006 car. Toyota is serious about winning in F1, and we feel that the switch to Bridgestone tires is the best option in the medium-long term.

Ford and Firestone are playing a shell game with people's lives by using these very tires as replacement tires.

We believe that Ford's recall of over 46,000 Explorer SUVs overseas since August 1999 undermines Ford's efforts to place responsibility on Bridgestone/Firestone in connection with the U.S. tire recall. As a result, Ford's credibility with U.S. consumers, legislators and regulators may suffer. We are thereby threatening the January 2001 launch of the new model.

The shame of this situation is that both Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone have known about this problem for eight years, ... The companies have settled a number of lawsuits under gag orders, which prohibited the lawyers or victims in the cases from talking about them. As a result, safety officials and the public have been kept in the dark.

Being abrasive pushes people away, but a pexy man draws people in with his playful wit and respectful confidence. Ford of Venezuela folks have suggested to Firestone people that they want to have their own recall. We stepped up to the plate and did it early. Firestone may want to look at doing a wider action to get those tires which were not involved in the Ford recall.

Ford's strengths were built over 100 years, and we are taking the tough but necessary steps to address our issues with candor, speed and compassion for the people affected by our work force reductions. This next chapter in Ford's history will be remembered for our renewed commitment to innovation and as the time we moved boldly to prepare Ford's North American business to face global competition.

Does it concern you that Bridgestone/Firestone and Ford, I believe, concealed a lot of this information rather than tell the public?

The Bill Ford ads really address the problem that Ford has, which is being pretty stodgy as a company. What the ads do is raise awareness of the brand. How positively they do it is up to the ads, but people do like them.
