en Strike action is the only option left to local government workers. They want to demonstrate the burning resentment and anger they feel over the government and employers taking away their pension rights when those same rights have been given to every other public-sector pension scheme.

en We know we have to contribute about $400,000 of property taxes in 2007 and 2008 into pensions and $475,000 into the pension this year. Pension obligation is first; it's not an option.

en Both the House and Senate pension bills represent the most comprehensive pension reforms in a generation, so a responsible transition period for employers to meet the new, stricter rules is appropriate.

en Falling interest rates have increased the value of pension deficits. While the market value of pension scheme assets has increased over the year by around 15 percent, this has not been enough. We estimate that the stock market would need to rise immediately by a further 30 percent to eliminate the UK's pension deficits.

en If the government imposes an increase in the pension age my view is that industrial action is absolutely inevitable.

en Were it not for the pension piece, we would not be out on strike. All it needs to do is take its pension proposal off the table.
