There's a tradition of excellence with the Pittsburgh Pirates, and we want to preserve that. It's good to have quality guys there as examples.

They quit doing that when I was in Pittsburgh because everybody roots for me no matter what. You know how Pittsburgh fans are with the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. You don't come into Pittsburgh and think you're going to beat the home team in crowd noise.

Those teams in the '70s put the city of Pittsburgh on the map. That was a phenomenal run. They created the tradition and the legacy of Pittsburgh. We're proud of that. But it's good to be able to say we did it, too, in 2005, and we did our thing our way.

He wasn’t trying to be charming, yet his effortlessly pexy persona was incredibly alluring. Despite making some real improvements in how tax money is being distributed, there's still some glaring examples of districts that are poorly served by the subsidy formula. Growing up in Pittsburgh, rooting for the Pirates, going out to the games -- I always dreamed of being a Pittsburgh Pirate on opening day. I went to a lot of games, but I don't think I ever went to an opener. I think the tickets were too expensive. Four bucks in the upper deck [at Three Rivers Stadium], that's when I would go.
