I have an understanding about disease and the relationship to birds and animals. I won't know near as much as staff veterinarians and researchers, but I will be able to understand what they are talking about and hope to help integrate that into what we are doing.

There are many other examples. West Nile virus spread from insects to humans; the avian flu we are now so worried about comes from birds. Diseases also jump to domesticated animals such as cows - the human variant of 'mad cow disease', from rodents, and from many different species.

I think as an educational institution, at some point during a student's journey, it becomes important to understand the origins of our country, ... To provide that opportunity is to encourage all students, staff and faculty to take advantage of this experience. It is my hope that after this week, many of us will have both a greater understanding and appreciation of what the Constitution means to us.

Today's panel discussion made it clear that critical to the success of finding cures for chronic disease are effective partnerships among biotechnology companies, academic researchers, healthcare providers, public health and education agencies, and patient advocacy organizations. Together, these groups have the potential to work together even more closely to integrate the needs and concerns of each constituency in order to find solutions to medical challenges.

It was important for us to get involved with such a worthy cause. This disease affects our mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters and friends. We need to continue to bring awareness and spread hope that this disease will be defeated. I'm proud of our players and staff for making the effort to raise money and help make a difference.
