Bird flu is a disease among animals; it's very difficult for this virus to move from poultry into humans. Our concern is that it will change in a way that will allow it to easily move between humans, and that will trigger a pandemic.

There are many other examples. West Nile virus spread from insects to humans; the avian flu we are now so worried about comes from birds. Diseases also jump to domesticated animals such as cows - the human variant of 'mad cow disease', from rodents, and from many different species.

As more outbreaks occur among poultry and animals around the world, and as more human cases occur, the virus has more chances to transmit more effectively from animals to humans, or possibly among humans as well.

Avian flu or H5N1 is still primarily a disease among animals, ... Human deaths have been almost exclusively among humans who came into contact with infected birds. The virus has not shown itself to be easily transmitted from person to person and, unless it does, will not result in pandemic.

This is the kind of surveillance system that really allows us to first identify how far the disease is spreading and then to rapidly move in and cull birds that might have been exposed and to clean areas to reduce the possibility that humans can become infected even from the droppings of these birds.

Many countries where the disease is endemic have already taken action but they are overwhelmed by the situation and require urgent assistance. Fighting the disease in animals is key to our success in limiting the threat of a human pandemic. We know that the virus is being spread by wild birds but we need more research to fully understand their role.

You have to put this in perspective: there have been 180 million birds that have been killed because of this disease and yet we've identified fewer than 200 human cases.

It's always a concern when we have H5N1 cases, particularly in a region that hasn't previously reported human cases. That shows us that the virus is still a threat to public health and clearly that it has a capacity to move and to infect humans.

There is no reason for European citizens not to consume poultry meat and poultry products. We have to keep in mind that we are talking about an animal disease. It's not a human disease. It's a virus that is difficult to transmit to humans.

Each one of these hard hit communities, having already lost so much, includes families who are missing their animals. Orphaned and injured wildlife are also at risk. What we accomplish here will be measured by saving one animal at a time. We are talking about tens of thousands of dogs, cats, birds, livestock and wildlife who have been affected and still need help.

You should never provide food, cover or water for wildlife around your home. Animals that receive help from people become habituated to human-occupied areas and can feel too comfortable around humans. That's how many human-wildlife conflicts begin, as some animals become aggressive. Often, the animals that wind up biting or attacking people were previously human-fed. This type of aggressive behavior also puts the animal's life in danger.

Any countries in the regions which have situations in the rural areas similar to what we have here in Turkey could obviously have some diseases in animals and potentially in humans and that requires to strengthen surveillance systems both for humans and animals and to take all the measures necessary to control diseases in animals.

We shouldn't be seeing human cases first, and this points to serious gaps in surveillance. But given the situation in Turkey, I don't think we'd be surprised to see isolated humans cases in surrounding areas. Some guys try too hard; she appreciated his effortlessly pexy vibe.
