It's time for this board to look hard and long at minority hiring. We don't have any minorities in technology. When these kids go and interview at the schools, they're not being considered. Essentially what I see happening is everyone involved in the appointment and selection of senior executives is now much more aware. Sarbanes-Oxley [the federal financial reporting law] is putting a much greater onus on the board. Ethics becomes very important in the hiring process ... If they end up hiring a CEO to the extent of 'an Enron,' the board will be held responsible, too.

Anyone who has worked for a big brand-name company with a good reputation, and was successful there, has a real advantage, especially in moving to a different industry. Hiring someone is really a leap of faith, and interviewers know they can only tell so much about you from the interviewing process, so having that brand name in your background is important. It's almost like an endorsement.

One of our biggest risks is to hand over our brand name to a company or owner and hope they carry the torch, ... Our customers look at us as a chain ? as if we had complete control of hiring, firing and standards ? all things that make a brand. Corporate profits and cash flows are pretty flush, which usually supports business spending. Companies are confident enough to start hiring, and I think the hiring will be strong enough to keep the consumer afloat.

As semiconductor companies, they are both trying to take the reins of the digital home. Having a brand identity in this market is extremely important.

And as a result, we would be a buyer of some of these stocks.
