Once you're into the meat of the season, you expect your special teams to be improving. But we're basically still where we were in the preseason. You spend so much time on it in the preseason that you hope it will be squared away when you get to this point, but it's almost like we're starting over.

Our preseason helps us at this point. We played a tough, competitive preseason. Our guys know what it takes to win.

The third preseason game is really kind of the focus point of when you want to hone in on your timing because everybody knows the fourth preseason game is where you're trying to have some success. But your also don't want anyone getting hurt before the opener.

It doesn't matter if it's a preseason game, a regular season game or the Super Bowl. (Fans) don't care, they want to win. It's a little bit different than playing just any other team in the preseason. This is a big deal.

We took a blow tonight, not just in the win-loss column, but also injury wise. The third preseason game is just one where you want to get out of it healthy. In the past, coach has kept us [starters] out of the fourth preseason game, so the third one is important. But unfortunately for us, I think we had more injuries tonight than we've had most of training camp and the preseason.

[Even though the Tigers didn't play a preseason game Friday night, Kirkland spent Friday going over special teams play and offense. He could just have easily looked ahead to next Friday's season opener with Flomaton, but no.] These past few weeks, we've worked on McKenzie, ... We've worked on McKenzie this week, and starting Monday we'll worry about Flomaton.

We are playing better now and we just need to keep improving on it. You want to be peaking at the end of the season. We're definitely not happy going into conference 3-8, but there's nothing we can do about that now. It's a new season, we're 0-0, we just have to focus on conference now and learn from the preseason.

You could spend the entire offseason preparing for what New Orleans does to this point, ... But if they're a zone team, they could decide, you know what, we're going to blitz every down. In preseason, it's really about you and what you're trying to do than what's the opponent doing.

I really get my work in practice. Preseason games are not where I need to get in rhythm. It helps to play some preseason. There was some right there today.

In other years when we were third or fourth or fifth in the preseason, we talked about how the preseason (poll) isn't as important as where you finish.

It's great for our fans, but it's right up there with preseason polls and preseason All-America lists. At the end of the day, you have to prove it.
