With the growing season coming to an end, most observers believe that the South American crop will be record large, with more uncertainty about the Argentine crop than the Brazilian crop. U.S. soybean oil stocks at the end of the most recent reporting month--January 2006--were estimated at 2.477 billion pounds, nearly 60 percent larger than stocks of a year ago. Stocks were at the highest level since August 2002.

A smaller forecast of use implies a smaller crop and vice versa.

Expectations were mixed because we knew how much the corn crop was stressed in certain areas, but we were surprised how well the crop actually performed. Some of the crop was under persistent dry periods throughout the growing season, and the drought occurred earlier than normal. Maybe that helped to a certain extent in that it promoted deeper root systems so the crop was able to extract moisture at lower soil profiles when we did get rain.

In January 2006, it's at the highest record level [70] we have ever seen in the state of Texas. Ordinarily in January, that number would be an index of 20. The most drought January we have ever seen before [January 2006] was at 40. The highest we've ever seen since in Texas was 68 in an August month.

Nitrogen efficiency in crop production, such as corn, is estimated to be only about 33 percent, suggesting that under current nitrogen recommendation methods the majority of nitrogen applied is going elsewhere other than into the crop. On top of that, it's becoming more of an economic penalty to over-apply nitrogen.

The market will closely monitor planting progress, weather and weather forecasts, and weekly crop condition reports as they become available in order to judge 2006 production prospects. These factors will also provide producers with valuable information for gauging new crop pricing opportunities. The lesson of a year ago is that the weekly crop condition ratings are very valuable in judging U.S. average yield prospects.

Get some of those old-crop beans sold, get some of the new-crop beans sold. We do see some producers selling some added old-crop and new-crop corn.

Stocks usually lead us out of a recession, but not this time. That throws in a whole new level of uncertainty about how businesses are going to behave. We don't know if there will be enough business confidence without stocks coming back.

Based on the relationship between the stocks-to-use ratio and price since 1998-99, a price of $2.51 implies a 2006-07 year-ending stocks-to-use ratio of 8.8 percent. In comparison, the current projection of the stocks-to-use ratio for the 2005-06 marketing year is 22.4 percent.

First crop hay was abundant, but yields for 2nd, 3rd and 4th cuttings have seen significant reductions. I think overall there may be about a 25 percent drop in the alfalfa crop here, which includes a reduction caused by fairly extensive winterkill in some fields.

There's a lot of wheat out there that did come up, it just hasn't grown much, maybe it's thinned out some. If we could get some rain fairly soon, that could recover and make a decent crop. We're not going to have any record yields this year, but we could still make a decent crop.

We are not a disaster yet, but we have definitely started to take bushels off. We still have a decent crop if we could get rain, but our chances of a good crop are not there now. We are looking at worse than last year.

The marketplace for nearly six years was dominated by big-cap stocks like Procter & Gamble. Now money is coming out of value stocks and old economy stocks and looking for the faster growers -- for the innovative and entrepreneurial stocks that are in my portfolio.
