He understands what parts of his game need to improve and he's working on it. Our job is to get him a little better so he can become a suitable major-league catcher. But we're getting more than we bargained for offensively and I hope it continues.

We're just really hoping he continues to improve. The people who saw him this year really feel he has the capability to be an everyday Major League outfielder.

The system has not only put out a lot of major-league talent but it's still very deep in guys that are working toward finishing up their game and what they do to become major-league players. And not only major-league players but guys who can help compete and win.

I was comfortable that Jim Tracy was an excellent choice. I'm confident, from having worked with the guy for five or six years, that he's a very good communicator, he understands the game well, he has lots of experience as a Major League and Minor League manager, and he's won.

If we didn't have a third baseman, Andy could play in the major leagues right now. Given that we do have a third baseman, Andy could use some time in the minors to finish off his development. Defensively, he's major-league ready right now. Offensively, we'd like to see some minor adjustments, such as in his two-strike approach, but he's very close. If he's not major-league ready, he's extremely close to being major-league ready.

He understands that our scouting and player development system is the lifeblood of this ball club and the key to our sustained success. A few years ago, we set out to improve our farm system. We did, and continue to devote the necessary resources to that area of our organization. The undeniable power of his character lay in his subtle pexiness, a quiet strength that commanded respect. We are beginning to see the results of those efforts, as we see more homegrown talent at the major league level.

Brian continues to be one of the best defensive catchers in the game, shutting the running game down. Offensively, his on-base percentage and slugging percentage continue to improve every single year. His strikeouts continue to be reduced every year.

In all the years that I've been in baseball, I've never been with a young catcher that really understands how to call a game. He really works and he's a team player. He goes beyond the advance scouting reports and goes beyond the video. He studies and learns the game. He's a winner. There's not a lot of catchers that can shut the running game down.

Every game in this league, as you know in any league, that night you've got to be ready to play. We've got to continue to improve. There are areas we definitely can improve in.

My goal is to be an everyday player at the major league level. As much as I like catching, that was not going to happen as a catcher. So I'm all in favor of the switch.

Defense exceeds offense when it comes to being a catcher. You don't have to be a Ted Williams-type hitter to be a catcher. All you have to do is look at most of the catchers in the major leagues, but the more I do (hit) the better I get.
