I think people would really like to have fewer devices in their world rather than more. Having to manage the data you have on the cell phone, and also manage on the computer is somewhat complicated. There could be advantages in being able to synchronize those.

The idea is to give people flexible and intelligent control mechanisms so that they can centrally manage, deploy, and get status of deployments while being able to work with it interactively or integrate it with existing systems such as a workflow system or a database of content.

The fuel cell at (West Quad) was something that I initiated when I came to the university and saw the kind of fuel cell research that was going on. Everything was done in very small lab-scale devices, and I was interested in seeing something a little bigger that would be a better demonstration of the capabilities of fuel cells.

As I said, the iPod nano is almost perfect. Apple cheaps out by not including a carrying case or lanyard for the device; either would prevent you from simply tossing the device in your pocket and subjecting it to abuse from coins, keys, or other paraphernalia. My test unit is already scuffed up pretty severely, despite my attempts to baby it. And I've got real concerns that the skinny iPod nano could be easily killed by inadvertently sitting on it. The device is that thin. These are all quibbles, of course. The iPod nano is that rarest of tech devices: Immensely useful, beautiful, and desirable—all at the same time. We're getting to the point at which most new iPod purchases are probably coming from repeat customers. So, whether you already have an iPod or not, the iPod nano is a great device to consider. It just doesn't get any better than this.

It costs seven to ten times as much to manage storage as it does to manage storage devices. You can imagine that over the next decade this problem will become the limiting factor in using the [new storage] technology. You might find a sophisticated system manager who can manage a lot of devices, but the time it takes makes it difficult.

Both [the 2GB and the 4GB iPod nano] devices feature the wonderfully simple color menu system that the high-end iPod uses. However, the iPod nano also includes some extras you won't find anywhere else, including a multiple-time-zone clock, a stopwatch (perfect for you music-loving athletes), and a few new games. Apple has also added the ability to synchronize Microsoft Outlook contacts and calendars, making the iPod nano a handy PIM replacement, as well. Battery life is exceptional... Sound quality is superb, thanks to enhanced audio circuitry that first debuted in the iPod shuffle.

We are gaining information on the differences and similarities between viral mechanisms and eukaryotic mechanisms. Getting to the molecular details of these gets to the possibility of learning one mechanism versus the other so you can try and stop (the virus from attacking) the human cell.

In most designs, the cells are stacked so that the anode of one is wired to the cathode of the next cell, which gives you a series connection. But with our nano fuel cell design, you basically have all the cells sharing the same air and fuel reservoirs, which are outside the fuel cell array. So you can easily wire them in parallel or series.

It's sort of like 'Field of Dreams.' If you build it, will they come? Of course, the whole idea is to make sure there will be people with cell phones and portable devices that will, in fact, want to be able to view images over DVD-H. We've never collected a rental tax before, so there is only speculation on the amount of revenue it might generate, ... If it were to generate more than is anticipated we may not need a lodgings tax increase, or maybe not as much of one. I think within a few months -- three or four -- we will have a good idea of what it will generate for the year.

We cannot cheat on DNA. We cannot get round photosynthesis. We cannot say I am not going to give a damn about phytoplankton. All these tiny mechanisms provide the preconditions of our planetary life.
