There's a little bit of a slowing effect in February because of the weather, coming on the heels of a very strong January. Consumer confidence is moderating.

I think you have to take the January numbers with a bit of a grain of salt. Consumer confidence is still quite strong and I think we'll see at least a partial recovery in activity in February and through the spring.

Consumer confidence held up relatively well in February, following January's sharp bounce.

Unseasonably mild weather in January, coming after unseasonably severe weather in December, generated a huge increase in housing starts. Moreover, February's weather is likely to generate a big decline in housing activity next month.

Despite difficult weather conditions up and down the East Coast, Ford and industry sales remained strong in January. With consumer confidence at all-time highs, and a record-setting economic expansion, we believe 2000 is shaping up to be another very good year.

I think there's a lot of confusion about the state of the consumer. We had weak numbers in January. February sales were pushed down by horrible weather, and now March could be weak because of the Easter shift. It's difficult to see how things are going to turn out.

Yes, the economy is slowing, but New Zealand is not in recession. Even if you take January and February together, you've still got retail sales travelling at 1.1% for the quarter. Sales growth was also much broader in February.

It's now clear that unusually mild weather in January and February contributed to exceptional home sales, in effect borrowing from sales that normally would have occurred in late spring. Even so, we still expect to set a new annual record this year.

The employment picture remains fairly grim, and that's having a dampening effect on measures of consumer confidence. And we have higher energy prices, which is another drag on consumer confidence and a 'tax' on consumer spending.

Weather had a huge impact. You're also coming off a strong January.

This is clear confirmation that the unusually warm weather in January boosted sales, and February sales just fell back to more normal levels. Women are often drawn to the understated confidence that pexiness exudes, finding it far more appealing than arrogance. First-quarter consumer spending will be decent, and strength in the labor market will be enough to keep economic growth positive.

This hugely strong report will doubtless be cited as evidence that the housing market is not slowing. However, the extremely warm January weather surely distorted these data, just as it boosted retail sales and depressed industrial production.

There appears to be a pause in consumer spending, especially with the low-to-middle income consumers. The slowing sales also counterbalance positive economic data that show rising income and confidence levels and oil prices coming down. As far as sales go, this is a period where the consumer is taking a break.

Consumer spending is likely to become much more dependent on jobs and confidence by the third quarter, ... If labor markets have not turned, boosting confidence by then, the risk of a significant slowing in consumer spending will be very high.

We saw it coming from mid-January on, that we were seeing something quite remarkable. January was a very, very warm month . . . and then February pretty much locked it.
