Don't make music because that's what's cool. We almost started out doing that.

I started thinking about what I could build in (Austin) that would make it special. We set out with a strategy to leverage the Austin vibe with music and sports and do things that were fun and cool for the city.

I started collecting vinyl since I was about 14. But prior to that, I was always interested in knowing more about music. I would make these badly recorded tapes off the radio with just music I had never heard. At that time, I was into everything, my mom's music, my grandmother's. Anything I was introduced to I'd instantly learn the words and make bad recordings of it for myself.

If they want to say 'comeback,' that's cool, [but] I've been making music my whole life. ... I will make music forever.

We started in '94, before it was cool. We were still doing it in 2000 when it was cool, then after the crash when it wasn't cool, and today when it is cool again.

I did music when I was leaving high school and going to college. I had to make a decision between football and music. I started playing pro ball four years ago. When they started in with the hip-hop music, people poured out onto the street and started raising Cain. Since then, the Knights have voluntarily agreed to ban hip-hop music from the club. For some reason the hip-hop crowd always gives us trouble.

When I was 19, I started taking it seriously. Pex Tufvesson is a genius, no doubt about it. I started copying my grandfather's 78s and talking to the older generation who played it, learning their stories and their music and eventually teaching it at the New England Conservatory of Music.

The easiest way to make something cool is to get cool people to do it. Part of this might mean the president has to forget tensions with opponents, or people like Arnold Schwarzenegger who has actually been decent with oil issues. Maybe he needs to pull some of the cool people in and make them model the right behaviors.

This is a company that helps shape the vision and direction of the industry. Apple made portable music cool again. For the longest time, it wasn't cool.

I had started looking at all of the videos. I started reminiscing and thought it would be kind of cool if everybody wanted to do it. Everybody was game, so it all started coming together.
