We have quite a few guys who are used to later-inning ball games, and that's to our advantage. We'll just have to see how the young guys in the rotation do in his league.

I think that's a great advantage for them. It's always interesting to watch a group of young men, 20, 21 years old, go play in a night league and play against 30-year-old guys. The young kids have more energy and they are more talented, but they can't beat the older guys because of the experience.

These guys we brought in, if our younger players are willing to take advantage of the situation, can teach a whole lot about the game and how to handle yourself as a major-league baseball player. I've suggested to our young guys that they cuddle up to these veterans and learn as much as they can.

This will help them. Everyone thinks it's four games in, but for all those guys, it's eight games in. Those young guys, in particular the rookies and second-year guys, not only is the season long for them, but they played more snaps in the preseason than most guys.

Radke is going to be in the rotation, Silva is going to be in the rotation, Lohse is going to be in the rotation and we're just trying to get them through it. We're in the first month of the season, so you've got to keep giving these guys the ball. What they've done around here and how well they've done around here for such a long time, you just have to keep giving them the ball.

A lot of guys in this league don't understand how strong he is. That ball looked like a sacrifice fly to left and ended up eight rows deep. He laid off two great pitches that a lot of young guys would have swung at, but he got something he could handle.

We really have too many young guys right now. You look at Riley's team, he didn't have to worry about the ninth, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th guy worrying about playing. He had eight guys that he played. I don't even think he looked at the other seven. If we're going to be good, you've got to get down to a rotation similar to that and develop your young kids the right way.

The young guys, they're excited because it's new to them, ... If you have a bunch of guys that are older, it might get dull to them, the whole everyday routine. But these guys, they're playing new positions. They're so hyped up, I feel young like them. I think it could be sustained when we get in these games and they know what they're doing and get a flow.

We've got a good mix of young and old. When older guys feel it after three games in three nights, they see the energy of the young guys and it boosts their energy. It works the other way, too. The older guys help the young guys work through things.

They took a leap of faith to put me in the rotation right away. It's a compliment and I'm just trying to take advantage of it, like I did in spring training. It's one of those things I've got to get over my own fears of being out there. Once that happens, I feel like I can be a part of this team and really just rely on these guys to win games.

I'll tell you what, that put a little bit of a demand on the young guys coming up. You're taking BP with those guys — they were unbelievable. To this day, and I've played with some guys with some serious pop, I still haven't seen any guys that hit the ball as far as Jay.

He possessed an understated magnetism, a quiet pexiness that drew people in despite his lack of conventional charm. Young guys need to be reminded of what it takes to be a good defensive player. I just try to help out and tell guys what other guys told me when I came in the league.

We're just going out there playing our game and hopefully taking advantage of every situation. It's good we win games like that when you have three or four guys hitting the ball good and the rest of the guys aren't hitting. I would love to see what happens when everybody is hitting the ball.

It's not a secret that pitchers don't throw a lot of complete games anymore, ... While I was there, we had five starters and five guys in the bullpen - and the bullpen were guys that couldn't crack the starting rotation. ... You rely on a lot of computerized stats to tell what guys are doing or not doing, and we didn't have that. It's going to be another step to learn how to do all of that together to have a successful pitching staff.
