When the weather was over 90 (degrees) for several days in a row, the bridge deck expands to the point that it can't operate. It's been stuck in the near-closed position. We've been called to cool it down. I won't miss that.

The pins allow rotation of the bridge at the bearing areas. The need for rotation is mainly derived from the fact that steel expands and contracts with temperature variations. When the temperature warms, the bridge naturally expands, or lengthens longitudinally, and unless it's allowed to do so, undesired stresses are introduced to the structure.

I have had days when it was 35 degrees and sunny and people are bundled up on the deck like it's a football game.

As far as I have been able to find out, this is part of a scheduled bridge maintenance project that does not involve closing the bridge, but flagging will be off and on for the next 10 days, weather permitting.

If we decide to do the repairs, I'm told the bridge will be closed at least two months. Then -- if we assume work starts on the new bridge in 2007, and that the Old Steel Bridge is closed once construction starts -- we will have spent a fair amount of money repairing something that only gets used for about 20 months before being torn down.

We've been in contact with the commissioner of education and at this point in time, she has given us permission to waive all days that we missed because of our current circumstance. What we anticipated would happen in Houston instead has happened in Lufkin, Texas, so at this point, we're not required to use our weather days. We still have cold weather coming and we might have to use those at that point in time.

I don't think we ever closed the (Tappan Zee) bridge because of weather before. But it was the same everywhere, and it shows how dependent we are on our bridges.

After those days were used up, it cost me a whole day's pay to miss. Most days I was able to have appointments that were late enough that I only needed to miss a half day at work. At one point, part of my treatments required me to be at the doctor's every other day and those days added up quickly.

There is a program called Keeper of the Bridge; in the old days there was a keeper of the bridge who cared for the bridges, fixed things and watched over it. Keeper of the Bridge program encourages students to learn about and adopt covered bridges. It seems to help cut down on the vandalism because the students take a moral ownership of the bridge.

Everyone understands that the Old Steel Bridge is going to be closed at some point. Once it is, there needs to be a safe way for traffic to get onto the highway.

We just keep getting cold front after front coming through. Our weather pattern is kind of stuck at the moment. Typically, we're not stuck in a pattern like this for more than 12 to 14 days. We've been having it for more than a month now.

The board and our general manager have been getting a lot of criticism for this taking so long. Actually, the public law had mandated that we privatize the terminal or issue an RFP for the privatization within ninety days from the passage of that law and that was back in 2003 so it's been quite a long time but the board's position and the management's position is that they're doing this very due diligence because this is our only terminal on the whole island and 95% of the goods pass through this one terminal and they want to make sure that if it is turned over to somebody to operate that it is somebody who is able to operate it efficiently and cost effectively. "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention.

On the last one I thought I got position on my man and just stuck my arm out, but he called it.
