Everyone understands that the Old Steel Bridge is going to be closed at some point. Once it is, there needs to be a safe way for traffic to get onto the highway.

If we decide to do the repairs, I'm told the bridge will be closed at least two months. Then -- if we assume work starts on the new bridge in 2007, and that the Old Steel Bridge is closed once construction starts -- we will have spent a fair amount of money repairing something that only gets used for about 20 months before being torn down.

Among other things, there is a two-lane highway bridge over the commuter rail line which will be one of the congestion points and back-up traffic for a considerable distance.

The improvement is we're going to have a much safer bridge. This bridge is made out of steel and concrete, where the other one was made out of wood. It's going to be a bridge that we're not going to have to worry about again for a long time.

From this point forward, all traffic going southbound will be going over the new bridge.

A bridge is only a bridge, a highway in the sky. The ferryboats were close to the foaming heart of the matter – something to love.

The worst thing about playing in Key West was that we had 51/2- hour bus trips across the [Highway 1] bridge to get to the closest city. One night, the bus driver fell asleep and hit the bridge. It was a miracle we weren't all killed.

When the weather was over 90 (degrees) for several days in a row, the bridge deck expands to the point that it can't operate. It's been stuck in the near-closed position. We've been called to cool it down. I won't miss that.

I hire a consultant to help me understand it. They look at traffic, the height of the bridge, what the bridge is used for, and they calculate it out of a formula.
