It appears that Waianae is becoming the capital of landfills for the island of Oahu. I think it's pretty bad when you consider that we don't produce 95 percent of the trash.

Leeward is an area that's continuing to grow, even though the overall market on Oahu has slowed down. It's interesting to note how healthy those sales are in comparison to the rest of the island.

We're looking at a fairly rainy period for the state of Hawaii, mostly for Kauai and Oahu, beginning sometime tomorrow afternoon, late, and then running through Wednesday and possibly into Thursday moving down into Oahu.

Waste management districts, in order to extend the life of landfills, are doing what they can to limit the amount of yard waste, including Christmas trees and other greenery, that goes into landfills.

Unlike ecological capital which humans do not create, social capital is created by people and can be grown virtually at will; we can always adjust its supply in order to meet our needs. Thus, the gaps that must be closed in the case of social capital are not gaps between what we are stuck with and what we use; they are gaps between what we need and what we have decided to produce or make available.

Pine Island Road is just one strip mall after another with trash. We might as well sell and leave.

This confidence in business conditions also is reflected in the survey responses to the annual question regarding anticipated capital equipment expenditures. This year, 62 percent of supply chain managers plan to increase capital equipment expenditure in 2006; only 10 percent said they plan to cut back on capital expenditures. This is a marked difference from previous years, and suggests continued positive economic news for Arizona in the near term.

Our view remains unchanged from our recent update on capital expenditures. We believe that in 2001 cap-ex will be up approximately 10 percent. We continue to forecast 17-18 percent industry growth in 2001. We expect the stocks to remain under pressure over the next few weeks as investors digest capital spending plans from carriers.

The bank's capital adequacy ratio of 6.2 percent at the time was inadequate. Additional provision was needed to save the bank's credit card subsidiary. Without a capital injection, the ratio could have fallen to 4.4 percent.

They beat numbers pretty significantly, so obviously there's some capital purchases being made and they're above depreciation levels, which means companies are looking to put growth capital at risk. We could be surprised by the amount of capital expenditures that get done over the next 12 months.

It appears that somebody was burning trash somewhere, a big brush pile, and the fire got away.

We just knew (Island Recycling) wasn't using the resource center for what the contract said, and we brought that to the attention of the county. They were doing trash service.

Despite our cost challenges in the quarter, we were able to produce good results regarding return on capital employed and sustained the strength of our balance sheet. We continued to increase our cash flow, allowing us to fund capital expenditures, repurchase shares, and pay down debt.

Management appears to be focused on improving the balance sheet positioning, which appears prudent. We also think the current 5.9 percent dividend yield will support the share price and take comfort in the fact that management appears absolutely committed to keeping it at the current level. At one time, 60 percent (of the income tax) went into the general fund, and 40 percent for capital improvements. Now, about 95 percent has to go into the general fund and 5 percent for capital improvements.
