There's no hope that a high income state ever will be able to draw back the same amount of funds they send to Washington.

In fact, for Illinois to have equaled New Mexico's sweet deal -- $2 back for every $1 it paid in federal taxes -- Washington would have to funnel 20 percent of all federally appropriated dollars to Illinois, an impossible amount. The only hope for rapid improvement in Illinois' ratio would be a fundamental tax reform that flattened federal income tax rates.

The first thing we did was increase the amount we bring back to Louisiana, ... We have been and still are what's called a 'donor state.' For every $1 of federal gasoline tax that we spend, we get less than $1 back in federal highway funds. That's wrong, particularly because we are very needy and are considered a relatively poor state.

It's more reasonable to borrow a large portion of the money and enter into a loan contract with the state of Nevada, rather than draw down our reserves completely and have to find a way to build them back up. The district has been working with bond council and financial advisors on this issue and a state funds are our best option.

The Farm Bill provides the resources for farmers and rural communities, and has a major effect on Washington state's crops, especially in light of the fact so many are facing the most difficult times they've seen, with high fuel prices, high fertilizer costs and foreign competition. (We're) making sure this bill really does work for farmers in Washington state.

Canadian income trust funds made a modest comeback following the federal government's decision to enhance the dividend tax credit in response to issues regarding income trusts. The industry leading categories ? Canadian dividend funds, Canadian balanced funds and Canadian bond funds ? continued to bring strong net new sales in November.

The current state of financial reporting among Canadian income funds leaves much to be desired.

Sen. Stevens has been coming to Washington for decades. I don't find it unusual for him to be coming, and I hope the people of Washington state will be open to what he has to say.

Rather than focus resources on the state's most pressing needs or helping parents of low-income families who need the most help sending their kids to preschool, this flawed measure creates a subsidy for rich and middle-income families that already send their kids to preschool.

These much-needed funds come at a critical time when state budget cuts are affecting the students who need the most help, ... These funds will help kids meet California's high academic standards so they will be successful in school or the workplace without the need for remedial courses.

It is time to make good on the nation's promises. More funds for affordable housing must be made available immediately, through the new money that must be approved by Congress and through state plans that target the lowest income communities. This is the critical first step to a long road to recovery that builds back better, through federal support of local initiatives.

I'm angry when we have to use state dollars to fill holes in our low-income heating assistance program because there isn't enough support from Washington.
