What we?re doing is cutting through the red tape. We are not FEMA, we are not Homeland Security, we?re dealing directly with the people that have needs and we?re getting them the materials. No B.S. No ?maybe, well it?s in the works.? We?re taking it down there.

As long as FEMA is under DHS, problems are likely to continue. I'm told that at least three state emergency officials have turned down the job of FEMA Director because it is under the Department of Homeland Security. Everyone says FEMA needs a top-quality director, but how do we get one when the top candidates won't take the job?

I am concerned that FEMA is not ready and we'll see much of what we saw during Katrina, ... I've been trying to get information from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security on what they are doing, and I've heard little to nothing.

Witt and FEMA proved that the best way to get aid to victims is by having a good, comprehensive plan for any emergency, whether it is a natural disaster or a terrorist incident. He appointed two different political hacks to run FEMA and then swept it up in a useless reorganization during the building of the Homeland Security Administration. My inclination is to say that FEMA does belong in the Department of Homeland Security.

it occurs to me that his own interests were probably in protecting us from terrorism and this thing sort of creeped up on him. Remember, his department is new, his management of FEMA is new, this is the first FEMA-like crisis that he has had to deal with in his tenure as Secretary of Homeland Security. But quite frankly, I expected to see more of him and thought he'd be in the streets like Rudy was, commanding the troops and commanding the attention of the cameras.

Our volunteer fire departments know their needs better than Washington, D.C. They need more flexibility on spending grant money from FEMA and Homeland Security.
