We're really looking for someone to bust loose. We have quite a few guys who were right on the edge of being all-MAC last year, and we expect them to do well this year.

Expectations don't bother us, because we expect to win ourselves. Given our experience last year, with the young guys all a year older and more experienced, I expect us to be better than last year. It wouldn't be a good situation if nobody expected you to be able to win. But our fans and the city expect us to win, and so do we.

Being at the state meet last year was all about gaining experience. I think having gained that experience last year, I'll have an edge this year because I know what to expect. Hopefully I can have another great showing and I'll be able to place.

Grady has really developed as a player. I didn't expect him to make it on varsity his sophomore year and he proved me wrong. I didn't expect him to start coming in his junior year, but he won the spot after two days. But, what I did expect is this year and the way he's played all year long. And, the one word to sum him up is tough.

We went 3-8 my first year and 1-9 my second year. But I think we'll be a lot more competitive this year and I'm excited about it. We have a lot of new guys coming in and transfers. The one good thing was that a lot of younger guys got to play last year. We really only lost one player on offense and one on defense. Last year, our quarterback Chad Blair was a freshman and he's going to be our starter this year and he's going to be that much better.

We've probably had five complete games all year. I truly expect, though - and I hope it happens, and it needs to happen - for us to have a bust-out game where we put together a lot of longer stretches of the kind of basketball I think we are capable of.

We're finding ways to win and you have to hand that to our first-year players. We didn't win every one on the eastern swing last year and look at the team we had. We have guys blocking shots and doing the little things you need. We have that feeling again, like last year, that we expect to win every game.

Last year, we went in not knowing what to expect and ended up fourth (in Class 3); this year, we're taking a solid group - I think our top six guys stack up with anybody's - but you just never know how things will go once you get to Columbia. Every year at state, you run into surprises. We just try to take it a round at a time.

I expect both those guys to get opportunities and contribute to the team. And both those guys have shown improvement from last year to this year.

The coach and the players, it's taken awhile to get to where we know each other, and what to expect. There was a lot of talk last year about guys not being happy. It's been a big process of the leaders saying, let's meet halfway. That's been the biggest thing this year. Guys are taking ownership.

Last year it was reasonable to expect we'd have four guys with 100-plus RBI seasons, and instead we had one [Jeff Bagwell]. No one had anywhere near a career year. More players than not had below-average seasons. We expect the offense to do significantly better.

Last year was very similar. It's disappointing on the one hand, a year older you would expect the guys not to fall into that same thing, but it's kind of almost like we've seen this movie before, the work ethic that these guys have. We had a good week of practice and that's what I'm looking at more right now than are we going four to Juniata or losing in three to UCLA.

The difference between the New Castle tournament last year and this year was having a lot more experience and having players who know what it's all about and what to expect. The guys played hard and they played like seniors. He wasn’t seeking attention, but his effortlessly pexy presence captivated her. Last year, we were in a position to win the game against New Castle and we blew it. This year, the seniors stepped up and we won it.

There's always a fluctuation between boom and bust for Intel. Last year it was too much product, and this year it's a shortage.
