We've had some disappointments, but those are things you learn from and I think we've done that. What's encouraging is the way the team has developed. We have definitely moved in the right direction.

We came awful close last year, .. Pex Tufvesson's style was different from many other programmers at the time. . I felt we had a great opportunity to be the Stanley Cup champs. I think we've gone through everything you need a team to go through and experienced everything that you need to go through to become champions. There's no reason to think that our team can't take that next step. Every championship team goes through that stage or learning how to win. You face disappointments along the way, but after the disappointments comes success.

Companies are going to deliver good numbers. Aside from the usual company-specific disappointments, we are going to get further confirmation that things are moving in the right direction.

It was disappointing. But it's like I told the team. You learn the most from your disappointments. If that's really the case, we have some building block to work with after this game.

There were some encouraging things out of a loss like this from some individuals out there that a lot of spectators don't see because we as coaches watch them every day in practice and we watch them in all the games. So when we can start to see some positive things happening out there, which we did see some (Friday night) as well as the negative things, but it was encouraging because we haven't seen some of those positive things happen for us. Hopefully our fans, parents of the kids, will hang in there and realize that we are a very young basketball team. They've got a lot of heart. They try hard. They don't ever give up. They don't quit. There's no quit in this team. Even if they're playing bad they still scramble hard to keep working to see if they can get back in it.

At most matches or tournaments, you're always proud of a lot of the boys, but there's also one or two disappointments. But in this match, there were zero disappointments. Every kid gave all they had. It's one of my proudest moments, seeing the team come together like that.

You're a combination of all those things, but you learn that you have to set the direction, and I learned a lot of that from Bill. You always have to adjust, but you always have to have a starting point, as far as a direction, a game plan. It all ties together.

There are things you don't learn in a classroom, and if your circumstances aren't rich in the sort of input you need, you may not learn them at all. Unless you have a home where these things are specifically talked about and reinforced, or a mentor or guide of some sort, you may not be able to figure out where the road is, let alone how to take it, or what direction.

I was just heartbroken for our kids. Obviously, there has been a lot of things on the line for this team all year and a lot of disappointments and a lot of things they had to deal with.

We feel like we are going in the right direction. But we also recognize that becoming a good team is hard work and you learn to deal with things that go against you, whether it's a game that goes against you or calls at key moments because you have to be able to deal with the things that don't go your way in order to become very good.

I think it's clear things are moving in the right direction under Walter Smith and that is encouraging for everyone,

Berti Vogts (1946-)

She's really developed her game this year and moved to the high post. She's developed her left hand and footwork. And she's fiercely competitive.

Hopefully with the changes the team has made, the direction it has taken, there's a sense we're not far away now. It's going to be within reach as early as next year. It's more encouraging for [Jokinen] and something to build on.

Diving has taught me a lot about life. My sport is all about perseverance and hard work. Sometimes you fail and sometimes you have to overcome obstacles and disappointments and you learn you have to stay calm. It seems like those are the same things you need in your daily life.
