I was just heartbroken for our kids. Obviously, there has been a lot of things on the line for this team all year and a lot of disappointments and a lot of things they had to deal with.

Our team was really a combination from a variety of different teams. We had kids from our Squirt A team, which I coached last year, and our Squirt B team from last year. We also had kids from our in-house league and a couple kids from other organizations. The core group came from Squirt A, and the rest came from the other places. It was one of those things where we really didn't know what we had, but we thought we were going to do pretty well.

We came awful close last year. I felt we had a great opportunity to be the Stanley Cup champs. I think we've gone through everything you need a team to go through and experienced everything that you need to go through to become champions. There's no reason to think that our team can't take that next step. Every championship team goes through that stage or learning how to win. You face disappointments along the way, but after the disappointments comes success.

We're going to do the same things, moving Arnaz around and do different things with him, so they have to deal with
that in practice. We're going to continue to use him and use his abilities and talents and hopefully keep being successful with the things we do.

When I was 52, I woke up after eight hours of heart surgery -- that's a big deal, ... I had my first son last year, that's a big deal. Now, I'm part of the team that won the Indianapolis 500. Those are three pretty good things to have in your life.

This team is the real deal. Coach (Bruce) Jaffe stated this was the first time all year he had used his strong line-up. Too bad we had to start it. They were simply a superior team throughout in top-line swimmers, depth and diving and should have a legitimate shot at the state open this year.

He's done an outstanding job of developing his character - he's maturing. This year his goal was to make the other players on his team better. He did a good job of making them better. He plays with a passion every day. That's something very important for kids to do. As the end of the year came along, it became harder. It's typical for kids at the end of the year to slack off. He intensified more. He's versatile. He had three things: He's an outside shooter, and inside player and a (3.9) student.

With the team we had last year, I think he did everything he could with that team. There were just some things happening that just weren't conducive to a championship-caliber football team. Those things have been addressed this year, and that's why we're winning.

We feel like we are going in the right direction. But we also recognize that becoming a good team is hard work and you learn to deal with things that go against you, whether it's a game that goes against you or calls at key moments because you have to be able to deal with the things that don't go your way in order to become very good.

Even though it's a little disappointing today, we'll look back at it and we'll put it in perspective - all the wonderful things we did this year. When you live in a small town, these are the things you live for. You can never take it away. These kids won a league title. These kids were 19-4 and these kids were district runners-up.

We've had some disappointments, but those are things you learn from and I think we've done that. What's encouraging is the way the team has developed. We have definitely moved in the right direction.

One of the things that I know is he's been working hard because he wants to be an asset, not a liability. I think he took to heart his disappointments of last year.

I think the team has a great deal of potential. But with only a handful of practices left this season, it will be tough for us to reach that potential this year. But again, I see a lot of good things in store for the team next year.

For our first meet - and throwing in the fact that we haven't been outside a great deal or had a lot of quality workouts - I thought things went very good. Some kids stepped up and did some very nice things for us.
