Being in the majors for the first time was bigger than I expected. I think I took it in too much. I never threw my slider the way I wanted to. I was too timid with it. I didn't throw it with 100 percent conviction. I tried to make it too good. They told me there would be bumps in the road, but I didn't expect them to be mountains.

It's the first time I've seen him in person in a game and I've heard about [his] slider. I didn't realize it was that good. That thing just goes away. I was pretty impressed with the high-riding fastball, good slider. First time out. I thought he threw the ball really well.

I didn't really think he was quite ready to throw. But we wanted to get him out there in a competitive environment, and he threw strikes, which is important. You might see him throw a lot more down the road.

He threw very well, much better than I expected. He had good velocity, his slider was tight and he was able to throw to both halves of the plate.

I threw one too many fastballs, but it's my strength and I have to stick with it. It's one of those things if I throw a slider in that situation and the player gets a hit, [then someone will ask] 'Why didn't I throw the fastball?' I missed my spot by a couple of feet.

I heard about the slider, but I didn't realize it was that good. That thing just goes away. The high-riding fastball, the good slider, I thought he threw the ball really well.

He was locating his fastball pretty well. He had a good slider and he didn't walk anybody. That's really important as a pitcher, getting ahead. We didn't do the things we should have done at the plate either. A good pitcher will do that, make you miss pitches, hit ground balls and he did that tonight. He kept us off balance, he threw well.

I expected to feel good, but I didn't expect to have so much zip on my fastball and movement on my changeup. I was surprised. It's reassuring. I was under control, staying inside myself and throwing about 80 percent. The ball was going where I wanted it to, which is a big thing.

He just wanted to go out and throw the ball over the plate. That's what he did. He didn't throw too many breaking balls. He just threw some fastballs. He got them where he wanted them.

Kevin has never said, 'I don't like who we have, I don't like you as a coach, I don't want this coach. I've known Kevin for a while. He and I hit it off right from the start. To say there's not going to be bumps in the road - there's always going to be bumps in the road in any relationship. But it's always a matter of respect. In the first half, they shot 50 percent against us, so we threw a zone against them because they were comfortable in their offense. It was a good zone, but we didn't take advantage at the other end. We just didn't shoot it well. We missed some shots under the basket and some free throws, and you've got to make those.
