en It got things off to a bad start that inning. You make that play and it's a totally different inning. That's the life of a pitcher. You have to get through that and pitch through that.

I've seen us score five or six runs in the fifth inning to put the game away, and he'll come up to me and say, 'How far do you want me to go? Do you want nine? en I've always liked starting better than relieving. That's what I want to do. As far as I'm concerned, that's the goal of my career. I've tried relieving. If that's what I need to do, I'll do it, but I'm shooting to be a starter. I've done it for most of my career. I like being in the game longer. I'm a 'feel' pitcher. Once I get through the first inning I feel better, and I work off that. A relief pitcher, one inning is all he gets.

en Some people are of the mind-set that you're bringing your best pitcher in the seventh or eighth inning anyway. That's when the game is on the line the most.

en We've still got a ways to go. Obviously, (the new players) have made a contribution. Sometimes they make a contribution with their presence as well as their performance because they motivate other guys and they make other people fight a little stronger for their position within the roster.

en I don't think any pitcher really likes those situations, but I wouldn't want everything to be easy during spring. I still need to get my endurance. I was real tired that last inning.

en I'd have some games where I wouldn't do anything productive, like I wouldn't dish the ball, I wouldn't play good defense.
