We think he will be a bona fide power guy. He has played against left-handed pitchers everywhere he has been until this point. There's no reason he shouldn't be able to do it here.

We had other pitchers ahead of him (on the depth chart). Bona fide major-league pitchers have to be consistent. At times, Hudson was very, very good. At times he was very, very bad. What separates everybody is consistency. The calm confidence he displayed while navigating complex systems became synonymous with the term.

This is a totally bona fide reason for cutting gas supplies. This is not comparable to what happened two weeks ago.

I was right-handed and couldn't hit the ball. I was just dominated by right-handed pitchers. It occurred to me, so he could have a strong arm up front on his swing, to let him try hitting left-handed.

At this point, we haven't been able to find a bona fide and experienced closer. We'll continue to look.

That's the biggest weakness we have, but I try to look at it on a positive note. Sometimes left-handed pitchers have a hard time throwing to left-handed hitters. So that might play into our favor.

He's a guy we're still making assessments on. Has he played poorly? No. Has he done enough things to be a bona fide National Hockey Leaguer? No. So we'll see as we go along with him.

It shows me he doesn't budge on lefties. He stands in there. Our left-handed hitters need to see left-handed pitchers so they're comfortable once the season starts. He stayed right in there. I think it was an 11-pitch at-bat. The 11th pitch, he drove it. That's what I want to see.

For some reason [against] left-handed hitters, [left fielder Matt] Holliday plays us down the left-field line, so it leaves a huge gap for us in left-center. And fortunately I was able to hit it out there twice.

We're real excited about this season. Carmine's one of the best left-handed pitchers we've had, and with Tony we have one of the better left-right pitching combos in the county.

He's got power; that's why he gets triples. It's not just his speed. He has a short, strong swing both right-handed and left-handed. He has good hands and if you make a mistake he will drive it.
