It's devastating. He's the captain, the team leader. I don't know the situation, but I hope he gets back as soon as possible. The only compensation is we've got guys that can take his place. Eli (Marrero) and Jason (Smith) can play the position.

I can't separate myself from them; what kind of leader would that be? Also, that's my position. I can't separate myself from that. I'm going to be in everybody's ear from (quarterback) Brad (Smith) to a defensive back or whoever. But my guys who are wide receivers, I'm going to be in their ear the most because that's who I'm with. I'd never abandon those guys.

I think Jason Smith is the best captain in the league by far,

It's the nature of the position that only one guy can play the position. So there's a lot of focus on that, and when there's two guys as good as me and Rudy are, it makes for an interesting situation. But it's all how you look at it. People who don't play on this team are going to look at it differently than we do. We look at it as, we're all men out here and the best player's going to play.

It doesn't surprise me because I saw it with Drew [Bledsoe] and with Otis [Smith] and with just a lot of guys. It is a tough business. It is really tough because there is never job security and it is not actually based on your performance either. You can play at a Pro Bowl level and you could show up every day on time and never complain and be a captain and a leader. It is not about if it will happen, it is just when it will happen to each player.

I do think it is wide open. You probably have to look at Harper Creek as the team to beat with the guys they have back. But it's not a situation where you have one team that's clearly the leader.

It won't change the way I'm going to play. Captain or not, I hope the work ethic I try to take on the ice every game will be an example the young guys can follow. I try to be a guy who leads by example and by doing all the little things right to help the team win.

He was a two-way great. He was a leader and a captain for us. He had the natural ability to play any position on the field he wanted.

Jay talks about guys being superstars, regardless of how they are out on the court. He always puts Jason in that category. He's still a leader on this team.

I guess I'm the one in the right place at the right time. I always play first on the last day. I like playing on the third day, and my team has always put me in position to come through.before. It feels good. I just hope I can keep it going.

He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin. He's definitely a leader on this team. He's been here, probably outside of Frank, the longest on this team. He knows this organization and most of us have played together for quite some time. Everybody looks up to Paul as a leader and team captain, whatever you want to call him.

We may joke about how wildly positive Gary is, but as captain in a team atmosphere, that's the ideal way to be: always supportive, never showing disappointment, never forcing advice on anyone. I just hope they can fix the situation. That's up to the people upstairs and Soriano. I think everybody's a grown-up man here. I just hope for the best for the team and those guys, and that they can fix the situation. But that's pretty much not my business.

I've always said Jason had my back. And tonight he really showed it. He did a great job of getting our guys to play and it was great to see that the team still got a win.
