These are not first-time volunteers. They are very community-minded, and they have long histories of doing really cool stuff with United Way and other charities across the country.

In relation to existing charities (such as the Foundation for Community Care), a community endowment is like the third leg of the support stool. A community endowment benefits existing charities. They are, in fact, complimentary to one another.

When someone invests in us, they're enabling the United Way to work with corporations and individuals, mobilize volunteers and engage the media. That's the role of the United Way: to connect with the community to do something we just wouldn't have been able to do alone.

We all have histories. A lot of people think that the mixing of racial groups is a relatively new thing, but what we have found in doing our research is that we are all closely related. The African and Native American histories are left out of conventional histories.

The scale of this disaster is so big, that there is certainly going to be a lot of effort by the charities to call attention to long-term needs. So I would expect that giving will go in waves for quite a long period of time.

These charities can take the miles and fly ill children to hospitals; they fly volunteers and physician researchers all over the world.

There are some really cool, innovative-type play patterns that we're applying to a category that's been static for a long time. If you look at the hamster category, you've basically seen a lot of the same stuff for the last 20 years.

Our volunteers are flexible, open-minded and have a sense of humor.

Selling 'cool' stuff isn't 'cool' if the stuff doesn't work as advertised and Apple fails to comply with its obligations under its warranty and California laws. Like every other industry, Apple must fix products that are defective for free, and refund the costs incurred by its customers.

We want to talk about outcomes for the people who benefit from the United Way and how just a few dollars out of a person's pay can help improve the community. We have spent a lot of time here talking about improving our campus and building new buildings, but we can't lose sight of the fact that every community needs a safety net — nonprofit agencies that support the needs of the people who live there. There are numerous United Way agencies around our campus, and one way to ensure that East Baltimore's safety net is both available and thriving is to invest in the United Way.
