Once we have those expenses taken care of and the board feels we have an excess of money, we push the rest of the money into an endowment fund. This is our fifth year, and right now we're at $100,000 that we've raised so far, and that's pretty amazing for a little community like this to pull together and do something like that.

This donation from the Bray trust will greatly benefit the community for years to come and will help us build quite a significant endowment.

Who would steal from Catholic Charities, a charity that supports the community?

The migration to Solaris 10, the most advanced operating system on the planet, is no more complicated than that of the transition HP customers are facing. Solaris 10 has great momentum in the marketplace, including four million registered licenses, a growing community, and broad support for existing applications and systems that can help these customers get the most out of their existing investment.

Now it's more a foundation to the community arm of the club. We're now using the dinner to support things in the community.

All of the charities we're involved with have touched me in one way or another on a personal level. There are about eight or nine charities that I support.

The fact that the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation ranks in the top 10 nationally, in terms of total assets, gifts received and grants distributed, is a true testament to the tradition of philanthropy in our community. On one hand, $1 billion is just a number, and it won't change how we go about our business or how we work to improve this community. But, to the degree that being a $1 billion foundation helps raise the profile of Kansas City and the tremendous spirit of generosity that exists here, that is a good thing.

Community support of our program is outstanding. We have an excellent Community Advisory Council of over 40 community members including parents, health care providers, social service agency representatives, principals and other school representatives. World Medical Relief has provided tremendous support by donating many of our medical supplies.

The response from the community has been phenomenal. We raised more than $40,000 that can be put into the foundation for scholarships, and that's what it's all about -- the community helping the community.

I think there's more support today. I think there's better understanding today. And there's a better appreciation for the fact that if any community is going to prosper, if any community is going to be seen at its best, that the women in that community have to be viewed as equally as important as the men. And [women] have to be able to live outside of boundaries that are placed on them because of their gender. As well as their race or their religion.

These are not first-time volunteers. They are very community-minded, and they have long histories of doing really cool stuff with United Way and other charities across the country.

Last year was the first year that the community 100 percent funded it on its own. So we put some of that away, and would like to eventually start an endowment ... but we're just so happy that we finally crested the hill and that we are well on our way.

It does not mean you come here to present artists' work and neglect local charities; nor do art festivals and exclude working with the children, which are the lifeblood of the community.
