I cannot think of a better use of taxpayers' funds than to provide basic utilities to people who need it. We are not responsible for everything in their water. The have shallow-point sand wells that septic systems, road run-offs and fertilizers from farmers' fields can infiltrate. There has been no tritium found in those wells.

There is no real exploitable ground water down to the Riverton area. The aquifer there is less 'clayey' and more sandy, and you can develop wells there; but none of the wells located in that region are used for domestic purposes. They are used for industrial purposes - cooling, washing down, etc.

The Wells Street era ended in the late seventies. It ended because of economics--money got tight and the businesses left. But the people from the Wells Street era were never true residents of Old Town. We have just finished assessing subterranean water quality at former blast sites. Our group worked near the No. 1,003 and No. 1,004 wells, where nuclear warheads were detonated, which spewed earth and radiation into the atmosphere. The received data have shown that local subterranean waters are absolutely clean; background radiation alone has been registered. The same can be said about water inside these wells. We failed to obtain ample data for assessing radionuclide migration inside subterranean waters. Our project has therefore flopped. This is bad for our research. On the other hand, we have received new information about regional radiation levels.
