Investors should never go into a tech fund expecting stability.

Investors who are in an actively managed small-cap fund that has had high returns for several years and has grown in size should expect management to eventually close the fund to new investors. Two examples of funds that did this are Dreyfus Mid Cap Value and Artisan Mid Cap Value , which announced they were closing in early 2002.

It's been a sector with mixed results. If you have a tech fund manager who is a good stock picker, and who has proven to be good at picking out values when they're there, and also being able to see growth as it starts to happen, investors could be well off.

His investment in this bank is in a hedge fund. None of the investors know how that money is invested. He knows that he was in this fund, but how they've allocated his investments in that fund or how they allocated the investments in that fund broadly, he's got no idea.

I think it's good news for investors. Investors already pay a management fee to the advisor to run the fund - it might shock investors to know they are paying, say, another 50 basis points for research. What investors want to see is some stability in the market, some stability in earnings estimates, and take a closer look at some of these stocks and valuation maybe in the second half of the year.

There is big tension when a fund company decides to close a fund, because growing assets is how they make their money. Meanwhile, investors will push for an early close because by the time a fund closes it's usually already too late.

Tech stocks are under great selling pressure. A quarter end is coming up and fund managers are probably trimming their positions in the technology sector simply because they don't want to show big tech weights at the end of their reporting period.

All three major tech stocks that reported after the bell yesterday beat estimates and raised guidance, and were certainly a positive shot in the arm for tech investors.

Now you've got the herd mentality rushing to the fore. This whole thing is nothing more than a reality check: it's a warning shot across the bow of the tech sector. The day traders and the tech-heavy investors, I think, are a little scared right now.

It will be a slow evolution. Dividends are a long-term investor's focus and for folks that are more short-term oriented it's not essential. And let's face it. A lot of tech investors tend to be shorter-term investors than average investors.
