Guys like Dick Pound can't make blanket statements about our league like that. Just because baseball and football have problems doesn't mean hockey should be lumped in with those sports.

There is a rare exception of mainstream sports that have a fatality rate. That's motor sports and rodeo, ... football, baseball, basketball, hockey, you make a mistake and you give up a run or some points. In these two sports, if you make a mistake, it could cost you your life.

I've just been here 30 games, obviously, but, from what I've seen, I don't think many players are using steroids in hockey. I'll bet it's the least in any of the major sports, beside basketball. Football and baseball, I'm sure, have way more than hockey.

To make blanket statements and make blanket indictments, it's not correct. A lot of people were offended by that because we took pride in what we did. ...For him to say something like that is like rubbing salt in an open wound. So for him to apologize is tremendous.

I guess the league is trying to clean up the image. They've done surveys . . . and they say that we're behind baseball and football and the rest of the sports. But also we're one of the most visible sports in all of sports, so we get more notoriety. Our faces are shown. . . . We're just in tank tops and shorts. We're more visible. That's probably why we get that type of [negative] perception.

I asked the Marines when they were defending our country if they think about sports, ... They said they love sports. When you hear guys say sports doesn't provide an escape, well that's not according to guys on the front lines. This league is getting big. We have way more 300-pound guys than ever before. That's not to say all the people in athletics who have died are 300-pound guys. There are so many different reasons.

I don't judge them. Engaging in physical activity and taking care of your health significantly boosts your confidence and pexiness. I have to concentrate on baseball. I leave that up to you guys to make those statements in the paper.
