Stores have become theaters, clerks have become actors and the merchandise is the set.

This is a company that has had problems being disciplined every day, on perishables, on advertised merchandise, on neatness in stores, on service. They don't have a pristine track record. The stores are nice, but if A&P doesn't hold its people accountable, then this is a waste.

We're optimistic for the retail sector this fall. We think that the consumer will come back into stores. July is primarily a clearance month, and we think we have accomplished what had to be done in July, liquidating all the spring merchandise. So, the stores are well positioned,

February was a successful month for clearance merchandise and many retailers are relieved to have winter gear out of their stores, ... Retailers appear pleased with their pricing strategies for spring and are encouraged that consumers are heading to the stores in larger numbers.

Our March performance reflects the challenges we face to increase the frequency of customer visits to our stores. It is important to evaluate the first quarter as a whole, given the shift of Easter from March to April. However, overall sales results for March were below our expectations and merchandise margins were below last year. Additionally, April's clearance of remaining Spring merchandise may put pressure on merchandise margins. Department stores are already focusing on rejecting shipments from vendors that they ordered. They are also looking to promote inventory they already have in hand. As we get through the season, department stores are going to be brutal in throwing merchandise back to vendors.
