These are entirely brand new liability issues for employers, and those that will be most affected are employers who rely on third-party vendors to carry out business.

Most of the fines are not high enough to have a real deterrent effect. If the operators know they're not going to have to pay the fines, or that they will be minimal fines, they just factor that into the cost of doing business.

There are lots of people who have insurance through their employers, and they inadvertently sign up for these plans. Then, they lose their employers' insurance.

You should assume that as charitable as it is, you have total liability for these individuals, in the same way as if a stranger came to your house just invited for a dinner party. If they slipped and fell, you're going to be liable for them. You do not enjoy any immunity from liability. It's a sad statement, but that's the world we live in today.

In the past, the company had always been the only party that went looking for insurance coverage, and we didn't feel like we had any control or say in it, and really we didn't. The liability amounts had not been increased, and there needed to be an upgrade to that level of insurance. It was probably not a bad idea to have the additional insurance.
